2014 NHC (National Homebrewers Conference)

Post #1 made 11 years ago
Brewers,

Grand Rapids, Michigan. USA is the site of the 2014 NHC (National Homebrewers Conference). I will be there and blogging my daily misadventures. So stay tuned for that! Here is a link to the list of classes that I will TRY to attend?

http://www.ahaconference.org/conference/seminars/

I will record a podcast for Basic Brewing Radio. It will be a comparison of stored no-chilled beers. I brewed one last September, last January and in May. All three are the same recipe and all three were fermented with the same big yeast starter at the same time. The challenge is to see the difference between them and if the hoppy beer aroma has faded?

I had to test the 8 month old wort to prove it wasn't filled with botulism. I had it un-fermented and after fermentation and a few days ago to check carbonation. I still am alive and kicking! :drink:

If anyone is going to the 2014 NHC look me up to say Hi! I have a lot of friends there so one more won't matter! :salute:

all,

I have been cleaning and packing all day. (Actually "She Who Must Be Obeyed" did all that. I was drinking beer and staying out of her way! It's a 9 hour drive to the kids house and a hour further to the NHC. I will link up with the BBR group Thursday afternoon to record the podcast. I listened to the show last year and it's about the same subject. Oop's. :idiot:

Tomorrow is my day for heavy hitting the classes. 55 different classes to choose from. Running from room to room. It's like the first day of high school. Lost and dazed. I will write up a blog? later tonight. Stay tuned.

All! :drink: :drink: :drink: :drink: :drink:

The National Home Brewers conference 2014 is well underway. It's a 10 min. walk from my hotel to the conference center I wish they had Porta parties along the way? When I signed in to the conference I received a 22 ounce bottle of beer and a bag with trinkets and giveaways. I went into the Expo Center where they had free beer from craft breweries and free giveaways such as grain, yeast, and every small inexpensive brewer toy that you would expect.

There is an amazing array of brewing equipment. Pots, heating sources, buckets, bottles, pumps and software if you can imagine it, they have it. All the things that homebrewer were could want and all the beer you can drink. I couldn't drink that much beer because I was going to record the podcast later that evening. I suppose if I was tipsy the stupid things I say would be expected because I had been drinking. If I am sober then they know I was stupid. I guess I should have drank more because now they know I'm stupid.

The crew from basic brewing radio and I went out for lunch together. We went to a bar and nightclub that was right across the street from the hotel. It was called the Bob. Bob was not the name of the owner it stood for "Big Old Building". It has about seven floors each one has a different theme. A comedy nightclub, stakehouse and I don't know what else all that was there. I had a large blue cheese hamburger and a beer. What a big surprise that was? The stories and the beer both disappeared.

We recorded the podcast for basic brewing radio later in the afternoon. The recording went well and we had a good time. I expect the podcast to be broadcast sometime in July. The crew from basic brewing radio recorded five other shows that day. I bet they were sick of testing beer and small talk. I served cheese curds and small sausages along with pretzels and beer so that was my supper.

I also made Jell-O shots out of hop vodka and gelatin. The Jell-O shots were a bit harsh. I used galaxy hops with the vodka. It was a last minute idea just for fun. I might have to investigate the possibilities of doing that with some DME and hop vodka. The idea came at the last minute so they were a bit raw. I didn't find anyone who wanted to try a second shot. I will have to have a Jell-O shot hop shot with the beer to use them up?

Next year the 37th annual American home Brewers Association will hold the national home brewers conference in San Diego California. June 11 through the 13th 2015. We might have to make a vacation out of this if I can pull it off. That's a long way to go but I have never been to San Diego and I have family there to mooch off of. The weather in San Diego is usually very good. I always wanted to visit there so this might be my last opportunity as I am old and near death.

Friday, June 13! I just realized that it's Friday the 13th? I guess I will have to be careful in everything I do. With 55 classes it's hard to choose which one to go too. Each class is given by an expert who is usually nationally known. I expect to be jumping from one classroom to another and I will hope to get in before the class fills up. Since six classes run concurrently. I have to juggle my classes to get them all in. The classes are being recorded so that members can listen to them online at their liesure.

Friday night is the keynote address and AHA members meeting. After that from 7:30 to 10 PM is club night. Club night is the highlight of the NHC. Clubs from around the nation show off their beers.

I was planning to turn in and the boys from BBR decided to call and see if I wanted to go out for beer? Yeah right! Like I would say no! We went out and had a few beers and a lot of chicken wings and other non-healthy items. After that we went to Bobs and partied till lights out. Luckely we were 100 feet away from the hotel. Luckely after a hour we found our way accross the street and here I am!

I am sitting in my room at 1:20 in the morning with little chance of sleeping before the first class. I am going to try to get some sleep before I drop! Good night (or good morning)? Sorry I am a bit fuzzy (OK drunk)!!!!!!

All,

I am up! There is nothing like the smell of stale vomit to greet you in the morning. Why couldn't there be a aspirin convention here too? Oh, my head! I need a quick shower to wash off the bits of corn and other debris from last nights supper. It took a while but I figured out how to work the hotel room coffee maker. What a life saver that was. I better get going? I have to study before class!

Mally look at basic brewing radios Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/basicbrewing

they update pictures frequently. I didn't take my camera because it to big and bulky.

All,

I have a lot to tell but I am ready to crash and I have to clean up some vomit. The hotel will charge extra if I don't wash the walls clean. I met a few blokes from NSW (Sydney) At least some Aussies visit? Hint, Hint :shoot: One didn't count actually. He was born in Canada so he was a CanAussie? I think that is what he said? Good folk having the time of their lives.

There was some great beers there. All by beer clubs. Mostly from the Midwest US. Four hours of free beer for club night. Each club had 20+? different beers, Lambic style, Meads, Ciders? Hot beer, malty beer, Sours, fruit, IPA's. I am sure that I had about 5% of the choices. It was Amazing! :argh:

I will "tell all" tomorrow! Oh, I mean later today. I have to get some sleep because classes start in the morning. I have to be bright eyed and bushy tailed! (whatever that means??)

Gnomes need to drink beer too!

Is that a full bottle of beer on the bed as well? Didn't you have some explode on you last year too? Better keep that cool this year eh?

Bob, I better whisper this in case anybody overhears, but you don't want to meet up with Pat at the conferences. You will never get to see or do anything because he will be lecturing you on correct reporting of recipes & using the BIABacus properly etc. etc.  shhhhh...

All,

Pat. I talked to the CanAussie for a short while. He and his fellow traveler were from Sydney and neither was named Ken!
A friend wanted to meet Brad Smith so I took him over and introduced him. My friend (who I just met) asked Brad something (that I didn't quite hear) "Oh yeah", (looking at my name tag) "Robert and I are old friends?" I said "We know each other through Pat Hollingdale" The light bulb went on.

Mally.

Don't worry Mally ;) I won't tell PP :shoot: you said that. I know I would be taking a chance, but when the money starts rolling in from BIABacus? He will have to find something to spend it on?

All,

below is a link to the conference in general. Below that is a link to today's classes. Take a peek at them?

http://www.ahaconference.org/

http://www.ahaconference.org/conference/seminars/

This may be my morning schedule? I will probably change it. I will look later for the afternoon seminars. I am running late!

9:00 am – 10:00 am
How Good Is Your Grist?

The American Society of Brewing Chemists coordinated a collaborative test with 12 breweries on a method to check the coarseness of milling with sieves. This method can also be useful to homebrewers, because a correct mill setting greatly impacts the efficiency of extracting fermentable sugars. We will discuss the method, results from homebrew clubs, and how the impact of coarseness can be seen in wort. We will also demonstrate the manual sieve method.
10:15 am – 11:15 am
Experimental Brewing

Drew Beechum and Denny Conn discuss concepts from their upcoming book, Experimental Homebrewing. They’ll cover why you should experiment and how to set up and evaluate your experiments, as well as give tips on equipment, recipes and ingredients for fruitful experimentation.

Speaker(s):
Denny Conn
Drew Beechum
Draft System Design and Maintenance
Saturday, June 14
11:30 am – 12:30 pm
Location: Ballroom C

You’ve got your beer in a keg, but how do you get it out? Learn how to design and balance your draft system for the perfect pour of your beer, cider and mead. We’ll also talk about how and why to clean the lines, finding CO2 leaks (and avoiding them in the first place), and cheap and easy glycol systems you can use to keep the kegs out of the way but the beer close by.

Speaker(s):

Sorry to advise that Bob has died of botulism . The good news is that the botulism wasn't from no-chilling, it was from his kettle tap. Now you can't say he wasn't warned :nup:.

Rest in peace (sorry, I mean Grand Rapids, Michigan) Bob :drink:. Top bloke. RIGR.

We arrived home yesterday and the place is a mess. everything is either over grown or under watered. On the way (to) the NHC some damn warning light came on in the car. Stand by sometime in July? I don't remember much about the pod-cast. We talked about it some and James is Chris's partner in the (Beer and Wine journal) website. I am not dead! Well, one part of me is mostly dead I guess? To bad for my wife!

I will shortly be back to misguiding newbies. This is a temporary detour in life. Now Marys Aunt in Milwaukee is near death! Mary took a funeral outfit in case she goes while she is caring for her Mum? If she hangs on until Mary comes back WE will have to go back! :nup:

All these old gals are in the 90 year old category. (I don't know what that is in metric?) My Mum and Mary's plus her Aunt. All the husbands are gone. They die early because.... (Because they are married to women!!) If that doesn't kill you early, nothing will! :headhit:

Pat,

Yes there was a lot of good information to ingest. At the moment I have had to much "Chocolate Covered Beaver Nuts" to remember clearly. Some classes went right over my head because they were chemistry heavy and I am brain chemistry light. I did a cider marathon by attending three consecutive classes in the same room. I didn't have to move but nature made some movement for me.

I missed quite a few classes because of long lunches with the Basic Brewing crew. I had a few people from around the country who wanted to meet with me (Why?) and share some beers with me. I also met with the Cheesestradamus winner from two years ago. I did spend too much time in the exposition center where they demonstrated brewing toys, gadgets, software, pumps and the like. Between the exhibits pro brewers and brew clubs handed out unlimited samples of every type of beer imaginable. I missed a class or two because of them!

Somewhere above I put a link to all the classes names and subjects. They record the classes and put them on the web site for members to listen or download. It's 35 or 40 dollars to join and it may save people from the expense of traveling but still hear the classes?

The classes were mostly full and I had no problems getting in like I did a few years ago. Lots of room and some had tables because they were sampling (cheese, Honey, mead???) James Spencer did a class on small batches and it was funny and informative. I made that class to heckle him but thought better of it? I wanted to hear a class on bee keeping and producing honey for mead but opted on a class about experimental brewing and how to pull off a credible conclusion with valuable results. The class was good but not exactly what I expected.

I have to go. The weather is muggy and wet so naturally the air conditioner stopped working yesterday so I have to take a look at it. Also Aunt Jane died Sunday morning so another trip is in the forecast. Naturally we have guests scheduled for this weekend with no air and a funeral! High Summer is here with all it's problems. Still, it beats -35 and snow!!

What beer do you take to the funeral? A black one I suppose would be appropriate? (I hope you aren't wearing your Cheesetradamus outfit like you did to the last funeral ).

I was wondering how James small batch session went. Will look forward to having a a yarn with you later on that. I hear a BBR podcast today on mash hopping, FHH'ing and normal boiled hopping. There was a lot of giggling going on. I wonder if that was recorded a the conference :).

Cider, chemistry, mead and bee-keeping? Oh dear!
