Hey all.

My name is Scott, but feel free to call me Skip. I live in Worcester Massachusetts, which is in the Northeast US. I have been brewing AG for about 5 years now with a 10 Gal fly sparge home made system. It is my brother-in-law's setup, and as he works in retail, coordinating time to brew a beer can be difficult at best. So finally going ahead on my own to make small batch biab to perfect some of my brews. Look forward to talking with everyone.

Hello everybody!

My Name is Brett

I'm from Auckland, NZ

I found this site through RealBeer

I'm blown away by how much effort you guys put into your responses to everyone's questions.

I'm just about to bottle my fifth beer and second BIAB beer, a Coffee stout. The first BIAB I made (a Sierra Nevada Pale Ale Clone) turn out great and I can't wait to start drinking this latest one.

I'm just about to finish my software engineering degree. If you're looking for people, I'd been keen to help out with the BIABacus in my spare time if possible.

Hello,
I have been an extract brewer so far with 6 batches under my belt so far. I am just getting into BIAB and am looking to follow the KISS and RDWHAHB principles for my brews.
I live in the USA, in the state of Pennsylvania. When I get home from work, I need my homebrew, no doubt.

I am frustrated at myself for not finding this amazing resource earlier. I have been tracking down bits and pieces of biab info on other forums, videos and books. I am already for a first real biab session. I have done extract and partial mash from kits and my own recipes. I have most of my ingredients for my next stout and was just doing some final research and found this site.

Loving the info here and it gives me lots of confidence for the next step.

Hi, firstly i would like to thank you for the quality information you put up on this forum.

I live in Switzerland and already brewed a total of 3 All-Grain Lauter/Sparge batches before finding out about the BIAB technique.
Looking to always simplify things rather than complicate them, i went on sewing a BIAB bag to try it first hand.

First BIAB batch is planned at the end of this week, NRBs All Amarillo APA recipe seemd to be the right choice.
Its going to be a Maxi-BIAB because i only have two 30 liter electric urns.

What a great quote Doomy and a great first post :peace:.

Two 30 litre urns! You could actually get a heap of beer from that without doing any dilutions or sparging. Here is a post I wrote last night to a brewer with two 19 litre urns. Maybe it could be of help? That is a good thread if you have any questions on volumes, gravities, recipes etc, so post there if you think we can help.

Welcome aboard :salute:,

Thanks PistolPatch,

I already read your post, would using both vessels with different OG not affect the aroma coming from the hops?

Maxi BIAB (without Sparging) in 1 Urn for 20liters VIF seems ideal as my fermenter has a volume of 30l.

Hi! I'm a new brewer from Sweden with three brews under my belt so far (none of them are ready to serve yet though!). I tried BIAB last time and for the next brew I think I'm gonna try some dunk sparging. I need some help with my BIABacus set up, which is why I ended up here in the first place. So as soon as I can I'm gonna let you guys help me whether you want to or not!

/Sebastian

Doomy, the different OG's theoretically affect bitterness, not so much flavour or aroma. Also, it seems that OG doesn't have as much of a bearing on IBU's (bitterness) as thought a few years ago and that the current formulas we use allow for.

Most of the hop stuff we have atm is pretty ridiculous really . That's one of the reasons why in that post I linked I am waiting for a response. I'm hoping there is no response as it would take (me, at least) an hour or two to write/justify a proper brewing plan in that situation.

....

Your 30 litre urn with a bit of dilution yielding 20 litres VIF sounds like an excellent plan to me. (Your post tells me you have very sensible expectations of your kettle size - nice!) Try some side by sides with your two urns!

(I don't get time to read every post in this thread so if you have a reply to the above can you click on the link I gave in my last post and reply in that thread?)

Good stuff ;)

Intro Profile:
Name:Joe Werner, Age 76
Nickname: Fossildust (Brain cells have fossilized years ago)
Location: Indianapolis, Indiana
Hobbies: Wood working, gardening and of course brewing beer
Brewing: 2 batches Extract brewing Dec 2007, All-grain – Feb. 2008
Occupation: Retired Mechanical Engineer 1962-1987
Retired Operations Manager (Marketing) 1989 – 1994
Retired IT Tech. (POS systems) 1996 – 2009
… All these retirements were supposed to be the final one, however never could sit around and do nothing, so I keep getting involved in something else. In 2006 I was introduced to Craft Beer and I didn’t like beer. This introduction to beer changed my drinking habits from a quality Bourbon whiskeys’ to Craft Beer and eventually - attempting to learn everything I could about Craft Beer and Home Brewing.

A couple of years ago I started to build a single vessel electric heated brewing system, based on the Braumeister (which I believe is pricey and has a few problems) I needed an “all in one” system somewhat compact and one that would be easy to clean, based on the BIAB brewing process. Google searches led me to Arnie’s BrauBushka 20 SVS. The info on his blog site and others helped me through my design process. Those familiar with some of the SVS system designs attempted and/or built in Australia will see many of their design ideas incorporated in my system.

My requirement for a compact system are due to the fact that I had built a 10 foot by 12 foot Brew House in my backyard. This was the largest building I could build with going through a building permit process.

Being an engineer and believing that the Braumeister has a couple small problems, including the price, I decided to start from scratch.

Almost complete with the SVABS (Single Vessel Automated Brewing System), so it is time to start testing and getting the info needed to understand the BIAB process. A Google search “BIAB Brewing” led me to BIABBrewer.info. I’ve now spend somewhere near 20 hours absorbing info from this site and I suspect it will take months to go through it all.
Thank you to everyone involved with providing the information here, just started the learning process and many gaps in my understanding and knowledge have already been filled.
I will share the build process and photos of my SVABS with the desire that any problems seen will be talked about here in the forum.

It will take a couple days for me to put my photos somewhere for all to see.

Hi all! I'm an architect working in Chicago who's been extract brewing for about 5 years off and on. I've gotten board with the limitations from extract and really want to start creating my own recipes! Also, there are mountains of information that you'll never understand by only brewing extract which I'd like to know and experience.

BIAB intrigues me because I don't have any extra room or outdoor space so I need my system as compact as possible. Planning on brewing my first biab, a delicious citra pale ale I've made in the past, this weekend.

Looking forward to trying it out and then honing and problem solving with everyone here! Site looks amazing and I'm ready to get started!

Cheers,
Justin
