Post #1 made 13 years ago
Well folks.. tomorrow (Saturday, May 4) is Big Brew Day  . Initiated by the AHA. We have 9 teams that will be brewing and hope we get a big public turnout for this year.

Any of you folks participating? Is this done in other countries or just here in the US?

Looks like fun. You have BIG Equipment :D

We have 9 teams, each doing their own thing. Did some local advertising in the papers, etc. I'll try to get something on the radio today.

We'll have lots of food.. potluck and the club buys chickens to bbq. Have a mexican family that always brings either enchiladas or tomales. Mmmm. Also have a keg donated by Russian River Brewery and another by Bear Republic Brewery as well as some NHC award winning beers. And a band this year.

Later on, we'll have a taste-off to see who made the best brew by public vote. We have about 4 BJCP judges in the club, but this will be simply a popular vote. My team won two years ago.. not last year.. but, it's all fun.

HbgBill,

Sounds like you guys have it well organized. We collectively brew a 100 gallon batch. At the end of the day we all take home a 5 gallon batch and ferment on our own. We then bring back the beer to be tested, tasted and the best are then put into a wooden barrel for 6 months. If all goes well we share the beer and enjoy a never to be repeated brew! A gamble I know but that's part of the attraction for us!

I thought that it just meant that I got to drink a really big beer!

All I can say is.. "Oh My.." Great beers, fellowship, food, music.. you name it. Bear Republic supplied two corny's of beer.. Racer 5 and Red Rocket.. and Russian River Brewing supplied a case of Pliny the Elder for our toast.. One member has a band and played for a couple of hours and I played our club tune on my ukulele. All in all.. WOW.

Our club and a mixture of other clubs and newbies brewed a 100 gallon batch of British mild. We were fed all the hamburgers and hotdogs we could eat. Given a commemorative glass, a free smack pack of English ale yeast and 5 gallons of our wort to add it to. A nine hour day of drinking home brew while watching the young folks do the actual brewing!

This is a boring video showing 6 minutes of what we did.

HbgBill,

We don't talk funny. We all speak the same because it's the proper way to talk. Everyone else talks funny. Our Big Brew as a little different in 2013. As long as the beer is cold and the burgers are hot we don't care. Ta Ta 4 Now!

Must be all that cheese  :drink:

BTW.. What did you guys brew? We did the blonde. Looking forward to trying it. Ended up with a higher gravity than expected.. but, I think we'll end up diluting it later to bring the grav into our expected zone. I think that's what the leader of this team suggested. But not sure. I'm still new to this end of things.

HbgBill,

We brewed a Dark English Mild? Not my choice but I am sure it will go over big with my kids. We had the same thing happen to us. The first few fermenters were filled and we checked our gravity and it was way high (lucky them) we diluted the remaining wort and filled the other fermenters.
