Many thanks again for your contributions. Your numbers have now been collated into a spreadsheet and we can already see that mash time certainly makes a difference that is worth quantifying.

It is also more obvious now as to what figures we need from you. If you are brewing over the New Year period and have time, could you please take a few extra measurements for us?

[Please copy, paste and complete the relevant parts below into a post. Record your measurements in any units you like as long as they are clear.]

I did a full-volume mash for 60 minutes.

1. At 20 minutes, my gravity reading was...
2. At 40 minutes, my gravity reading was...
3. At 60 minutes, my gravity reading was...

I did a full-volume mash for 90 minutes.

1. At 30 minutes, my gravity reading was...
2. At 60 minutes, my gravity reading was...
3. At 90 minutes, my gravity reading was...

Quick Bonus Questions

A. The weight of my grain bill was...
B. The volume of water I mashed with was...
C. My average mash temperature was...

If you did a Mash-Out (and only if you have time.)

1. To reach a mash-out temp of 76-78 C (169 - 172 F) took (mins)...
2. At the start of mash-out, my gravity reading was...

It is not right or wrong to leave a BIAB mash at mash-out temps for any period of time. If, however you did leave the mash at mash-out temps, can you also please answer the following?

A. After reaching mash-out temp, before pulling the bag, I waited (mins)...
B. After I pulled the bag my gravity reading was...

Thanks in advance.

A very real difference to the entire all-grain community can be made by BIAB brewers who contribute here. Pure BIAB (full-volume brewing) has created research opportunities such as the above that would hitherto been impossible.

We hope you find contributing your figures here engaging and interesting. Logistically, it is not easy to take multiple measurements on a single brew. Whether you are an experienced all-grain brewer or a new one, contributing to a thread like this does take your time. We really value that, hope you learn something from going through the exercise and, most importantly, realise that you are a pioneer in creating data that will be of value to every all-grainer in the future.

Thanks in advance,
BIABrewer

2 brews for the day. Start 10:00 finish 20:03. I've read somewhere that that one of the drawbacks of BIAB is that you can't do two brews in one day. Well sir, wherever you are, here's two fingers for you. :smoke:

And this is probably the end of the 2012 brew season... 25 Brews. BIAB - the most fun a person can have with a pot and a bag..

I'm a pushed for time at the moment so I'm trying to do as many brews in a day/weekend as possible when I've got some spare time. Overnight mash means I can do 2 brews on a day AND have some family time in the afternoon. Yep, as you say, heat water, mash in, insulate and hit some zzzz's.
mally wrote:I can't believe you gained 19 GP from doing a mashout (brew2)
Mally,
The estimated gravity for the brew (Saison from BCS) at that point was 1.049 so the 1.050 is "expected". The jump from 1.031 to 1.050 is not, and most probably incorrect but I don't want to leave it out - that would be massaging the results. I've cooled and measured the sample the same way as all the others. Who knows, I might not have stirred the mash enough before collecting the sample?! One thing that might be of interest in logging these results would be to note if you stir the mash while heating it to mashout temps. I do, and it seem beneficial. But it's WAY to early to draw any conclusions.
