Cheers everyone! I am happy to join BIAB from N.E. Ohio , I am a mini extract brewer (mr. beer size) soon to do BIAB in the mini size since I am the only beer lover in the house.I have been enjoying a Christmas Ale from Great Lakes Brewing Co. as I post (if I could only make something close I would be in HEAVEN !!!!!!!!!) I have been extremely impressed with the BIAB website since I found it (I think) in BREW YOUR OWN magazine. The amount of information you have makes me feel like I can make a great beer from the start. THANKS ALL AND KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK. (US NOT SO GREAT BREWERS OWE YOU MUCH !!) :salute: :salute: :salute:

Mike here, in Seattle, Washington.

I started brewing in 1993, then stopped for several years after getting hit by the dreaded '7th Batch Curse' (finally figured out that I had pitched the yeast while the wort was *way* too hot, and wound up with a batch that I called 'NastyBraü'). I started brewing again a couple of years ago, doing mostly extract with some steeped grain adjuncts (crystal, mostly).

I like the Cascade-heavy Northwest style IPA's a lot. I finally got a new 44 quart (~41 L) brewpot and Bayou Classic SQ14 burner. I was going to start doing all-grain with the traditional 3-stage process, but my nephew (also a homebrewer) mentioned something called 'BIAB' in a message so I decided to check it out. It looks like this is exactly what I need to be doing! I've been reading the message boards here for a few days and finally registered. This looks to be a very nice group of very helpful people...

Looking forward to my first BIAB batch. I picked up 12.5 pounds (5.66 Kg) of grains today along with an assortment of hops. With any luck I'll be able to get this batch started in the next week or so.

Welcome aboard Mike,

Hope you weathered the storms last week okay.

You should find BIAB easier to get quality beers as you don't have problems like 'extract twang' plus you have a lot more versatility. I gave up extract brewing three times though I have tasted some excellent ones.

Your equipment will be great and you'll find plenty of people here who started three-vessel brewing and now only BIAB so you can be confident that you have made a sensible decision. (DKI just won the best beer at the Australian Nationals, good on him!)

Good luck with your first brew and if you need a hand to have your plan checked prior, post it up and someone will help you out.

:luck:

Thanks for the kind welcome. We didn't have any real bad storms here on the West Coast - just the usual late-October drenching rain for a few days.

I've been reading a LOT of messages, and have downloaded the Calculator (Maxi-BIAB that does the obsolete Imperial units that we're used to here in the backwoods), Commentary, and Checklist. Will run my grain bill and hops schedule through it and see how it looks. I've scaled a 6-gallon batch recipe to 5 gallons, but kept the hops close to the original amounts so it should have a little extra 'kick' to it.

Mike, that is the funniest signature I have seen in ages .

The imperial/metric thing is always a bit of a nuisance. "The Converter" here was great but apparently it is going to take some black magic by admin to get it working again as the original developers no longer support it. ADMIN NOTE: Unfortunately the edget being referred to here is no longer available. Please read this post for alternatives.

Glad to hear you weren't in the storms!

Good Day Maevans, Welcome the Forum.

Extract brewing is a good way to move to All-Grain as soon as possible!!

The Calculator is a bit difficult to start with, but, If you can look over the Master Guide, Basics of BIAB at http://www.biabrewer.info/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=194#p762 It will help you understand the need for the Calculator.

If you have questions about BIAB, Please post, we can answser almost anything!

Hi guys, my first post on this site.

I'm in New Zealand and have just recently started brewing again after about a 20 year break. A LOT has changed in that time.

I've done four kit brews and have just done my first BIAB brew last weekend, didn't go entirely to plan but I expected that with my first AG brew...a few things to tweak next time.

Great site guys, with some very useful information. Keep up the good work. :salute:

Nothing major, just got my water volumes all wrong. Was going for a 20L (ended up with 15L) brew and according to Brewmate I needed to start with about 26L of water.

Mashed at around 66oC, didn't mash out, just pulled out the bag and placed into another pot to drain. SG was about 1.030. Squeezed out about 2-3L from the grain bag in a 2nd pot and added into main pot.

Boiled for 60min adding hops. SG after boil was 1.055 @ 20oC with 15L of wort. According to Brewmate the post boil should have been about 21L, not 15, so not sure what happened here.

Cooled in ice bath for about 40 mins to around 26oC, then poured into FV and topped up to 18L with cold water - OG is 1.045. Really wanted 20L but didn't want to dilute it any more.

Pitched yeast and seems to be ticking along nicely now, so should be ok.

Yeah, I'm actually looking at it right now. Says closer to 36L, that would have made all the difference.

After changing some settings in Brewmate, that came pretty close too. I suspect user error ;)

WBosher, as the Aussies say "Good on You".

I hope this brew finishes well, and the NEXT batch goes great!!

Hi All,

I'm a new registrant based in South Wales, UK. My early years were spent living in Burton On Trent so I'm used to the smell of brewing :) and was used to ready access to excellent beers.

I've been brewing kits for a year or so and I am looking to give All Grain a try; the expense and space that 3V brewing requires makes it a non starter for me but after doing a bit of reading on JimsBeerKit and some internet searches I came across this site. Loads of great information to read up on while I gather my equipment.

I plan on doing miniBIAB and no-chill, and probably asking lots of stupid questions :)

Cheers,
Dave

Welcome aboard Dave and what a famous brewing place you reside in .

As for the stupid question bit, ask away. There's a lot of contradictory and confusing info/advice on the net which will have any new brewer scratching their heads . Some obvious questions actually never get asked :dunno:. Here's a great place to ask questions as someone usually has a correct or helpful answer. And, new brewers questions often result in answers some of us older brewers never figured out yet.

Maybe do a post in this thread once you are settled in?

:peace:

Hello fellow BIABers. I've been homebrewing since January and started BIAB about 6 months ago. Started no-chilling about 2 months ago and I still have a lot of questions about no chill best practices. Hope to find some answers here.

Thanks,

Chris

Hi all from nearly sunny Caversham, UK.

I'm just about to start my 3rd ever brew having jumped straight in to AG earlier this year.
Having just one boiling pot and a couple of fermenting bins, BIAB looks like the way to go - I tried it for Brew Two which came out lovely.

Currently scratching my head and working out volumes for No. 3...this looks like a great source of information so I've joined up.

Good Day Fireblade, Welcome to the Forum.

It is great to hear you Started All-Grain, and Your First BIAB finished GREAT!!! Well Done!!

You may want to look over and Download "The Calculator" at http://www.biabrewer.info/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=189 and find the volume of water needed for the Grain Bill you have, and Scale the Recipe, if needed, to fit your Kettle.

When you have Questions, Please post, we will answer.

Good Luck On Brew#3
