Your are right. On the history channel here they have a show about moonshiners that still operate in that area illegally.
There are folks here where I live that "brew their own" too.

Gentleman Jack is good. Never tried Beam's Choice. My current favorite is one called Buffalo Trace and I still enjoy Jack Daniel's Old Number 7. That is the one all the country singers put in their songs.
