serving cold beer on tap at an outdoors event

Post #1 made 15 years ago
We just had the final ceremony of the Israel branch of the Samuel Adams Longshot home-brewers competition.
none of my beers placed :nup: .
but that's not the point of this post.
the contestants had a chance to serve their beer to the public and get some real feed back from "the man on the street".
so i had to find a way to serve my kegged beer cold.
i was too cheap to buy or build a jockybox. so i opted for a method that would allow me to keep the cold kegs insulated and cold for a whole evening.
started out with a large blue plastic drum i got used from a car wash (they get the soap in these):

here after sawing the top off and giving it a good rinse.
i then got a handy friend to help out. he came over with this drill, saw and tools. did his thing and came up with this:

and no, it's not a bird house
after sanding a staining and installing two taps, it looked like this:

and the back:

the inside got a layer of insulation made from a camping mat and some polyurethane foam:

and this is what it looked like all set up and ready for the crowds:

Why is your wife drinking beer with that old guy? Is it her dad or grandfather?

That's a great looking set up Shib, very professional.

It's good to see a member on here that has more hair than me :)

Nice.

I'm planning on doing a very similar thing with a wine barrel :)

I plan to use it during 'rustic' camping ;)

I like the barrel idea. If you had too many beers you could just roll it over, sleep in it and still stay warm and dry :). So, did it do the job - stay cool for long enough?

You guys have a great brewing community going there.

it certainly did. added a bag of ice cubes at the start and than a bit more a few hours later. after six hours there were still ice cubes in the barrel.
