I don't know about anyone else, but dreams about brewing are making it hard to sleep at night.
For example, this Sunday I'll be doing my first BIAB which is my first AG brew. I've had this Sunday pegged for a couple weeks now to be the day I brew. That means for the past couple of weeks, dreams about brewing have been plaguing my quality of sleep. They're usually dreams where I'm debating doing one thing vs another (can't remember exactly what they are) and they almost always cause me to wake up. This all came to a head Wed. night.
Before I went to bed, I was reading The Commentary in detail trying to plan my brew day, in particular the section on how to do a mashout. I'll be doing a mini-BIAB in my apt. so I don't have a sky hook to suspend my bag while I heat to mashout temps. Originally I decided to try doing the mashout while holding the bag, I thought it wouldn't be too heavy since I'm only mashing ~4.5 lbs of grain. But in my dreams that night, I was having a never-ending debate with myself. Usually I notice I'm having a ridiculous dream and wake myself up, clear my head and go back to sleep and that seems to take care of it. But this one was pesky :x It continued for what seemed to be the rest of the night, but I did come to some conclusions...
1) Its my first BIAB so there's no need to over complicate things. Enjoy the first one and worry about getting a feel for the process.
2) If I find that I can handle holding 5 lbs of hot grains for the time it takes to raise to mashout temps, then I can always try next time.
What gives?? Please tell me I'm not the only one...

Great post BB and you are not the only one.
Forget the mashout. I did at least 50 BIABs with no skyhook and therefore, for me, no mash-out. I do a mash-out now because I have a sky-hook and it is brewetically correct
. It probably adds a metric fuckton (see here re terminology
) in efficiency but I have not collected figures on this. More importantly I have not noticed any deficiency in the quality of beer even after torturing a few over almost a year at impossible temperatures.
So, sleep easy BB, good luck and let us know how it all goes,

You are not alone. I've drempt about brewing on numerous occasions. Makes the brew bug bite extra hard

Thanks for the re-assurance. From what I've read and understood, that was the main disadvantage and for a first attempt at BIAB its not something worth worrying about. I've got some DME on hand if my efficiency is way too low.PistolPatch wrote:Forget the mashout. I did at least 50 BIABs with no skyhook and therefore, for me, no mash-out.
Sure does. And means that I actually think about brewing almost 24/7. My wife says I'm obsessed, maybe.SacSoul wrote:Makes the brew bug bite extra hard

BrickBrewHaus,
According to my SWMBO, I AM obsessed, mostly because of this, and other brewing forums, and by inference, all of you must be obsessed as well.

+1 big time.
SWMBO reads the homebrew forums just to have an idea of what i'm talking about all the time. she doesn't drink it but she's got good knowledge of how to brew it.
