Polar Brew 2015 (BobBrews Video)

Post #1 made 9 years ago
BobBrews has a bit on his plate atm but in my last check-up email to him yesterday, entitled, "Are you dead yet?", in his reply, entitled, "Are you dead yet? NOT Quite!", he gave a thorough update which finished with...
I will be back soon so let the overworked gang know!
I thought I'd take advantage of Bob's temporary absence and post the video link to the annual Polar Brew highlighting the bits I found most interesting as an antipodean and/or general BIABrewer member...

3:02 Our first glimpse of Bob (interesting for newer members only :)).
5:06 Some weird guy trying to get a young boy eat carrots off his head. (In the southern hemisphere we get worried about that sort of thing :dunno:).
5:25 First BIAB rig glimpse with a very interesting hop spider set-up. Never seen that before. How does that work?
8:20 Is that ice on the barbecue grill rungs? :o
9:02 Car driving on the ice/snow and if you wait a bit, Bob talking about eating something :interesting: .
11:40 Putting out the fire .

On the 11:40 bit, can I just say they are putting out a tiny fire in the middle of a huge frozen lake with ambient temps at -5 C (24F). Are they trying to stop a bush-fire or just very conscientiousness about reducing the carbon footprint?

Wisconsin. A strange state of affairs :smoke:,

Nice PP, and Bob. :champ:

I've thought about brewing on Lake Superior out front of my house, but I figure my well is only 40 or 50 feet from the lake anyway so why bother hauling all my stuff out there, plus the wind is very burner unfriendly.

18 inches of ice? That must be nice, we had around that mid January, think we are closer to 40 or more now, and I don't have a gas ice auger. Makes for some sore arms hah. Did the fellow who put the line down catch anything? Also, -5C ambient? That's downright Balmy, haven't seen temps that warm since early January around here, you guys should be wearing shorts! Haha!

Great idea though, the only thing I can think of that would be better than a day of fishing out on the ice would be a day of brewing just like that! Except here they really frown on drinking on the ice, completely illegal unless you have a shelter completely equipped with kitchen, running water, and working toilet.(kind of impossible, same rules for boats) Sort of puts a damper on things...

:idiot:

He wears the hat so we can find him in the deep snow. This year has been very low snow amounts so.... He is crazy!

I made one years ago to reduce hop matter when adding a lot of late hops. It will reduce some hop utilization efficiency but when you are adding that much hops (does it matter?)

I don't know? I would guess un-melted fat residue?

I put potato chips on the bun before the Brat. I was already (impaired?)

We didn't want to set the lake ablaze and carbon from the wood will help purify the water for next year???

I agree with you there! :kisswink:

goulaigan,

We have had a great Winter (so far) snow wise. Last month only 2.6 inches! The farmers will be pissed because they want the snow to insulate the ground to keep the frost line high (or is it low?) The temperatures have been cold but not (that cold) Next week we expect to be above freezing for the first time this year. The little snow we had didn't melt (obviously). We drink on the lake whether frozen or wet. Drinking and driving laws apply to boats and vehicles alike.

The guy fishing caught some pan fish, nothing big. Our fish shanties sound like yours but the lake is spring fed and not deep enough to be practical. That's why we choose this lake. Big enough for our purposes but none of the cars, four wheelers with shanties and ice boat crowd.

Awesome! Ya we can't drink on the lake even if we walk out there, or even if your a passenger on a boat. Damn Canadian nanny state alcohol laws hah. Sounds like winter has been easy on you guys, not us, shoveled my roof twice already...

Nice work again Bob!

The other thing for new brewers to watch is at about 2:40 in. They will see a guy throw 25lbs of grain into a square trash can.
If anybody told him about getting some voile and a kettle he wouldn't have to throw all that grain away

mally,

Actually the grain had such a high sugar content afterwords that he offered it to anyone who wanted it! The guy with the pointy hat Re-mashed it and had a small beer for free! I had to cut out that part because of the length of the video. Whoo Ya!

Bob, the bit I didn't understand with the hop spider pictured is why are the spokes inside the kettle rather than the usual set-up where they rest on the brim of the kettle? Must be hard to get into position?

PP,

When you place the spider in the pot you tilt it slightly and poke one of the three screw (spokes) through the handle hole and then lay them flat as you pull it back out. One motion, you don't even think about it. it's not a bother. I guess each setup depends on the way you cut your keggle or the length of the screws needed to span the opening?

Still quite not getting how that hop spider attaches Bob but you will be very pleased to know that I got your email and now understand 'tip-up' fishing. I must say that your following description was most helpful...
You sit in an ice fishing Shanty which is a little house that you drag onto the ice and fish from. It’s too damn cold to sit outside and watch the stupid flags so you sit in a shanty. You place the shanty where you want it and drill a hole in the ice in the center of the floor. You fish (regular) inside with a small rod. The shanties are heated, have TV’s and sleeping areas. They are man caves and everyone competes to see who is more manly??? Most of the time guys drink beer and play cards. Once in a while they look out the window to see if “a flags up”.
I can get that :smoke:.

Boy, I would love to do this. The problem is, it means I would have to winter in Wisconsin in my 5th Wheel. After wintering in West Virginia this year, I decided no more for me! I keep asking my lovely wife, "Our home is on wheels. Why the hell are we not in Arizona?"

I built one of those hop spiders for my 3-tier set up before I sold the entire system....worked great. Unfortunately, not long after building it, I started moving away from the hops and more into the lower IBUs. I give most of my beer away (otherwise I would be a lot bigger than I am) and I was the only one who really enjoyed the hops. Maybe I should have just stopped giving it away!

Thanks for sharing!

I don't think it is Bob in the calendar.

Bob has "huge arms" to lift his RIS grain bills single handed. I can't see any big "guns" in that pic.

Unless the pic was taken after he installed a pulley

jhough wrote:Bob , glad to see you around . How's the wife ? Missed seeing you around.
The wife is fine but the new knees limits her yard work and cleaning. I am carrying the load until (if ever?) she gets back to kneeling? It's a busy time of year (Spring) so I am active and working around the house. I only work when sober to limit accidents due to drinking. Sometimes working as much as 20 minutes a day!

My brew club won the Golden Growler trophy with my Belgian Double's help. :champ:

Next Month I travel to Sunny San Diego California for the National Homebrewers Conference. I will spend a week there and spend most of my income there too.

I want to apologize for my absence here. I have just been busy and I needed a break from being in a rut. My wild lifestyle, (getting drunk and recovering) needed change. I still get drunk but I don't necessarily recover from it anymore. Skipping the middle man as it were?

Never fear, I am on the verge of coming back! I have a few wedding DVD's to finish producing and some Party DVD's as well. (Cutting 45 minutes of wedding ceremony and dancing down to 10 or so is harder than you think) Nobody wants to end up on the cutting room floor. (all those 0's and 1's) get mixed up!
