Home Grown Hops

Post #1 made 10 years ago
Got some Sticklebrat Hops (In Picture) that are going to be picked soon also some Green Bullet and Smoothcones won't be very far behind.
I like Bitters and Ales mainly if I manage to get these dried and stored properly.
Any idea what they might taste like.
Suppose I really just answered my on own question just give them a tryout I have an exmoor Gold type recipe that is very simple

Thanks, seeing that picture is just the thing I needed to cure my cabin fever (5 feet of snow and sub-zero temps here right now). Can't wait to get my crop going again once Spring gets here.

Hopefully your spring will come sooner rather than later..
Looks pretty nasty from the pictures I've seen in the media.
I think I'd need a winter warmer or two to aid my cure
Take Care

Yeah, loads of snow in the NE. My mother in MA is around 115" this year so far. Soon enough my friend.

I have never seen or heard of sticklebrat hops Tingtong.
Those cones look very pale too, so don't know if they are normal? I can't see any browning so it doesn't seem like they are too old/dry. Like you say, just give them a try and see how they fare.

Do they have any lupulin visible when you peel back the bract? do they feel oily/sticky? do they have any aroma?

Is this your first time harvesting? If so, be prepared for a shock if you have any aphids. When I dried mine last year I had an army of aphids all over the drying screen! I never even noticed them whilst picking.

For info I am growing Hallertau, Golding, Cascade, and Chinook. I got my lagers, bitters, and IPA's covered!

I've stopped drinking, but only when I'm asleep
I ONCE gave up women and alcohol - it was the worst 20 minutes of my life

Hi
Should have put Sticklebract they are compared to Northern Brewer and apparently according to this are quite pale (where as the Green Bullet and Smooth cone are more yellow)
http://beerlegends.com/sticklebract-hops

Would be good to get hold of the newer commercial varieties but ... well protected

I will have to wait till the end of the week for any potential harvesting haven't seen any aphids yet ... but I think that probably rules out drying them in the bedroom (Supposed to make you sleep well LOL)
This is the second year but my first harvest will get a few more pictures when I can.
Thanks for the info

Right many weeks later after ..... scores on the doors are ....once dried
Sticklebract 146g
Smoothcone 160g (no longer produced commercially)
Green bullet 340g
Hops are very protected here (for good reason)
So regular varieties not available to the average bloke in the street.
Lots of work but hopefully make something with a piece of me in it
TT
PS No aphids Lol
