Jamil's Red Ale

Post #1 made 13 years ago
My next brew (while I wait for Bob's Black IPA to get ready) is going to be Jamil's Red Ale converted to a BIAB recipe.

I have put the recipe into the new BIABacus but seem to be having some issues (which probably should be posted in a diff section)

Here is the link to the original recipe: http://beerdujour.com/Recipes/Jamil/Jam ... RedAle.htm

1 - The first problem I am having is that it doesn't convert or show me how much water I should start with

2 - Under "the Source Recipe's hop bill" I have filled in the various hops, AA% and GRAMS. The problem is the ounces conversion is wrong.
The first one I have is 14.2 grams which comes out as .500 ounces. Correct
the next 4 all have 14.2 grams but they show .501 ounces.

3- It doesn't seem to allow you to paste any data in. When I first filled out the recipe I was on a MAC. Thinking there was a problem
there I tried it on my Windows laptop. Same issue.

Anyone see any issues with the recipe? What am I doing wrong with the new BIABacus?

Recipe question:
Jamil has "Pale Malt(2-row) Great Britain" in his recipe which I can't seem to find. ( I am shopping on Northern brewer)
IS marris otter equivelent? I really like to try and follow the grain bill as the originator did as best as possible.

Thanks and Happy New Years to you all!!!

rdselle,I am not the best at this but will give it a shot as everyone else is probably already drunk. :o
It looks like problem #1 is that you haven't filled in your EOBV "end of boil volume" or your VIF "volume into fermentor"

Problem #2 isn't really a problem is it? .001 ounces?

Problem #3 Do you have a red message at the top (just above the column letter which asks:enable editing".I pounded the keyboard hard before I notice this little bugger.

You can't go wrong with MO.It is a 2 row barley grown and malted in the UK.
The recipe looks good at first glance. Try to fill in everything you can under like mash instructions, hop management. The more info you give the BIABacus the better it works.
Have fun and a greaat start to 2013.

I expect it is from one of PP's formulas,I have noticed it occasionally before but decided I would rather piss him off in some other way, like asking about refracs and kettle valves. :smoke:
What about the other probs?

Hi rdeselle

Lylo is right, everybody else is drunk :drink: :drink:   including me so I'll give this a miss until 2013.

PP is already in 2013 so he has a head start on the rest of us. I'll do my best to sober up and have a look when I get there :drink: but I suspect PP will be on the case by then. Which is good because I'm drunk :drink:

I can help but you'll have to wait until next year..   ..not long now though.

All the best

Yeasty

PS..  :drink: :drink: :dream:
Why is everyone talking about "Cheese"

Hi there rd and happy new year to you and Yeasty (not Lylo though )

I've got your file here and I think you've done a really good job. Here's what I've done to get it over the line...

1. The reason for the hop 0.500 and 0.501 in the hops is because in the first cell you typed 14.17 while in the second one you typed 14.2. Both display as 14.2 though. So, no major worries there. I've changed the 14.17 to 14.2 though anyway.

2.In Section B, I've put in 23 L. You'll have to change this to whatever you want. That number is critical though for scaling so must always be completed.

3. In section C I've put in 22.7 L (6 gallons) as this is the EOBV-A of the original recipe. (Often that's hard to find and you have to take a guess but not in this case ). This number is essential to scale the hop bill correctly.

That's all I've had to do so great job rd :salute:.

One other minor change...

In the Mashing Instructions, because it is a single infusion mash, I have moved your steps to the first and last line of the section. This prevents it displaying as a Multi-Step Mash.

On the Pale Ale, Maris Otter is a high quality pale ale malt. It imparts more flavour to the beer than the standard pale ale malt. I wouldn't hesitate using it myself in the recipe but if you want to match the recipe, see if you can get your hands on Weyermann's Pale Ale.

Anyway, here's the file with the changes ;),

P.S. When copying and pasting from another source, click on the cell you want to paste to but paste the text in the formula toolbar towards the top rather than in the actual cell.
