Plastic CUBE Odour and Cleanliness

Post #1 made 15 years ago
Hey all,
I use 23L cubes that originally had LME in them. i therefore assume they are food grade.
I sometimes find that they still smell of LME or wort. or even worse - iodaphore.

any thoughts or recommendations on cleaning cubes?
Cube:
fermenter: Sourdough Spelt Ale, Classic Lambic, Oud Brune, Barrel Aged Belgian Dubbel
Kegs: Bob's Black IPA, Blanc Blond, Soda...

Hey Shibolet, my guess would be that they are food grade. Best wqay to check would be to see what they are made of. HDPE etc.

But given that they had LME in the previously, they should be fine.

As for cleaning, I give mine a good rinse with the hose after emptying followed by a bleach solution soak and multiple rinse prior to re-use.

hashie,
After soaking in a bleach solution, don't you have bleach oder left in the cube?

G'day Shibolet

I used to rinse with nappysan (sodium percarbonate) then rinse out with water but I found that I had a few spots of mould growing on some water drops inside the cube. Now I do the same but finish with a rinse of iodophor and I haven't had any problem with mould since.

So my advice is to clean it first then give it a hit with a no-rinse sanitiser.

Cheers
Dick

No, 3 or 4 good rinses with plain water gets rid of any lingering bleach odour.

The best way getting rid of odors etc. is water.
Well, it's working great for me. I'm cleaning bottles stinks with cigarette, fermentors being left overnight..
Just let fresh water flow non-stop for few minutes.
Works fine for me.
