Winpak heat resistance?

Never tried no-chill (yet), but I've been following the posts here with keen interest. I'm curious, however, about the Winpak that is referred to regularly (http://www.usplastic.com/catalog/item.aspx?itemid=23285) on the USPlastics site. I wrote the USPlastics company and asked about it's heat resistance and received this reply:

The maximum temperature that those are recommended for is 190°F.

I am not trying to start any kind of war here but does this not make it sound like putting boiling hot wort into one of these things is not a good idea? I will admit I have not read the 100+ pages of information on the homebrewtalk website, and maybe I missed something? (http://www.homebrewtalk.com/f13/explori ... ng-117111/)

Hi Robert,

That HBT thread is VERY long and sorry to say that I read it all. This was were I found this forum.

I am getting my U S 15.5 gal sanke keg cut tomorrow by a beer club member, my mom sewed my bag out of voile and I got 2 of these cubes coming today http://www.usplastic.com/catalog/item.a ... &catid=816 . It's listed as HEAVYWEIGHT (I dropped $51 USD with shipping). There's a lightweight version too.

That's good info about the temp from the company, I think 190* should do the trick. I know it's got to be above 180*. I've never BIAB or NO CHILL but I'm doing both on my next brew. Maybe the pros can chime in.

There are at least a half dozen different type containers guys are using on usplastics. On that thread one mentioned a 5g Fort-Pak Culigan water jug at Walmart for $10 USD with water in it. They have been out of them for ~3 weeks. It would be equivilint to this http://www.usplastic.com/catalog/item.a ... id=popcorn since they stock a 2 1/2 and 5 gallon sizes at Walmart.

You didn't miss anything on that thread, you are on the right track.

I would assume they don't recommend the containers for use above 190F because the plastic goes soft at that temperature, but they are HDPE and HDPE cubes are used commercially for hot packing of wort in Australia

"HDPE has little branching, giving it stronger intermolecular forces and tensile strength than lower-density polyethylene. The difference in strength exceeds the difference in density, giving HDPE a higher specific strength.[2] It is also harder and more opaque and can withstand somewhat higher temperatures (120 °C/ 248 °F for short periods, 110 °C /230 °F continuously). High-density polyethylene, unlike polypropylene, cannot withstand normally-required autoclaving conditions."
