Hair brained cooler idea

Post #1 made 10 years ago
I wonder if anyone has ever tried boiling in a cooler?

I know people put very hot water in them 190 f 88c water so if I use a rims tube and cover it to get the boil going I could reduce the amount of energy required to boil the wort. And I would not have to worry about setting the house on fire with my turkey frier.

It can and is done. Plastic Boiler

I would want to know that your Esky can hold boiling water and not poison you before I tried it.

Carry out a trial by boilng some water in a controlled way. Maybe use an over the side element. Don't wear thongs whilst testing :argh:

I have to say that I would not want to boil for 90 minuets in plastic... I have seen something that might work with a bit of smarts.....

Surely there is a way to get an element designed into a insulation system like this..... even just a slot so the whole Ekettle could be lifted in and out of the cosy http://www.instructables.com/id/The-Tun ... n-for-BIA/

These are popular in the UK, but I have not seen them much elsewhere, and are in fact on my list of "to get next" brew gear.
If I could easily get an element fitted I wouldn't hesitate.

It is basically a double skinned 80L stainless steel pot (though lots of smaller sized ones are available), that is fully insulated.

This thread here shows how one was cut up to suit.

Very similar to your idea cooldood, but with stainless.
