I have ordered enough grain to do 2 batches in my 40l urn. (same brew again) The other thing that annoyed me with my first one is that i got only 20l into the fermentor. I have ordered
10kg pale
2kg munich
1kg caraamber
Pistol patch was good to me 3 years ago and sent me a calculator with revised amounts for my urn. If i increase my brew length in this calculator (How much beer you want to end up with) to 24 Litres then i use all the grain instead of having a bit left over. Do i need to change any other parameters on this? This should also give me more than 20l into the fermentor.
One last thing can any one reccommend a thermometer as i only have a temp gun.

Cheers

Thanks for the link Mad, i'll work this out for my next brew.
Brew day went well today but i did accidently put 3 litres too much water in.
OG is 1.04 or 1.042 or thereabouts, not the 1.058 that i wanted. Not sure if the 3 litres made this so far out or i was low anyway. I have ground the 2nd batch of grains and intend to brew tomorrow night, should i use a litre or so less than the recipie to hopefully hit 1.058?
The wort tastes quite good so i decided not to try and boil it down, i presumed this would stuff the hopps up also.
Had friends drop round and the mash went over by half an hour, does this affect anything?
I will be bottling in a fortnight or so, what is the best for carbination and head retention?
Thanks all, sorry for all the questions.

Langdon. numerous questions
1) Why are you using an ancient calculator ? It's been updated numerous times in the last 4 years .
2Why the extra 3 litres ? did you not measure properly? Not trying to be an ass but don't understand that much extra water.
3) Why are you bottling so soon ??????Let the beer condition !!
I have let beers mash for up to 2 1/2 hours , only thing that happens is I might pick up .001 points of graity.

Langdon, after rereading my post I think I came across too harsh. I sincerely did not want to . Just wanted to make sure I understood what was going on.
Sorry ,
Joe

Says he's bottling in a fortnight (2 weeks)

Missing your OG by 16 points is pretty drastic, I haven't reviewed your file but I'd be looking back into method and recipe. Volumes really do need to be known and fairly accurate to have any hope of consistency.
Maybe run your method from grind to filling fermenter and we can help you out. Do not adjust your recipe based on a brew that was so far off the mark

jhough, thanks for the reply, no offense taken.
1)I was given that calculator 3 years ago on this forum, thought i'd use it again.
2) A flu just kicked me in the arse, first day of it and boy did it hit me hard, i did stupid stuff all day. I held 3 litres back to make sure it all would fit in the urn. After pulling the bag and squeezing the heck out of it i added 3 2 litre jugs, not 3 1 litre jugs. I realized this when i did the gravity reading.
3)Happy to let the beer condition, have the fridge set on 18dg and the recipie sais 10days, i'll probably be after advice on when to bottle closer to the time, happy to leave it longer.

Good to know i can go over mash time :)
Belly buster the first time i did this brew i got 1.048 and this time with the water stuff up 1.040. I ground up the second batch of grain last night. This morning i transferred the wort from the urn to the barrell and the oring had bust on the tap, wort on the floor was the result, still managed to fix it and have 23 litres in the fridge. I have also realized that i can not fit the 2nd barrell in the fridge so have bagged up the grain until after i bottle the first brew. I might have to look into the beer cube's because the round barrel shape tubs take up alot of room in the fridge. Advice from me here is not to leave it 3 years between brews, especially if you are a rookie.

Well the biabacus is quite easy once you give it a try.
I compared the results with the old calculator and the biabacus has 250g more grain than my original. I now need to try again and not add 3l too much water and see if i can get nearer to the OG. I think its correct :headhit: Will try for a 2nd brew today, will see how i go with work.
22.5L VIF seems to be the magic number to use the most (All)of my grain.
