Large Grain differance from original recipe.

Post #1 made 10 years ago
I'm trying to add a recipe from the book Modern Homebrew Recipes by Gordon Strong and I've noticed a large differance in the total grain bill once the grain is entered into BIABacus.....yet only a 2 litre difference in VAW.

The recipe is the Galaxy Pale Ale and the total grain bill is 5967g for a VAW of 25 litres. "Quote from the book....My recipes measure the volume of wort left in the kettle at the end of the boil, not the amount of beer in a keg when packaged".

My desired VAW is 23 litres with a desired VIF of 21 litres.....yet the total grain bill to suit my 23 litres is 4728g.....a difference of 1239g...or put it another way....a 21% less grain bill.

In section D The original recipes volume of ambient wort VAW is 25L.

In section B The desired volume into fermentor VIF 21L

In section C the EBC & SRM are blank.

A 23% less grain bill for only a 8% less liquid volume.

Does this seem right?

Cheers Mark

Bruiser,
You will next be asked to post your BIABacus file here by whoever offers to try to help.
Please post your file. (That was.quick) Check this forum also for proper brewing terminology.
VAW is less in volume than VFO (Volume at Flame Out); they differ by roughly 4%.
That might not be the only issue. Let's look at the file.

The BIABacus is predicting you will get 81.8% kettle efficiency for this recipe, but GS may base his recipes on a different number.

If you change your desired VIF to 23L (which puts your VAW at 25L for apples/apples comparison), and then set the kettle efficiency in sec. X to 70.7% the numbers will match up.

and just to state the obvious bruiser;

remove the 70.7% from your BIABacus section X if you plan to do this brew.
It will be much more accurate for you than trying to follow the original recipe.

If after numerous brews you are CONSISTENTLY getting different values from BIABacus predictions, then have a look at refining it to your equipment.
