Where to add sugar ... BIABacus

Post #1 made 11 years ago
So, I'm getting ready to brew a saison, and the recipe calls for table sugar as part of the grain bill. My understanding, as I've not done it, is that the sugar should be added near or at the end of boil so that it dissolves, but can't burn. Yes?

My actual question, though, is do I simply add the table sugar to the grain bill in Biabicus or should it go somewhere else...?

Thanks!

I add sugars near the end of boil too.

For the BIABacus there is a slightly different way to handle adjuncts. Firstly though, how much sugar are you adding?
If it is a small amount, then you could theoretically just add it as you would grain. However, be aware you will get a few more "gravity points" out of it. To adjust for extract potential look to section Y. Table Sugar is normally entered as 100% FGDB & 0% MC.
The BIABacus will then calculate everything else for you.

There's a fare amount of sugar in this recipe, approaching 10% (I assume that's a fare amount!)...so where would you guys recommend I place it into BIABacus? For the uninitiated (me) it seems that if I remove roughly 10% of the grain bill and place it somewhere else, I'm making some pretty big changes down the line in the calculations...no?

Looking for info! Love to learn!

Mally already gave you the answer you need.

Additionally, I suggest you use version 1.3T. Enter it as a grain but label it as boil only. Then do what mally said in section Y.

10% still isn't all that much really, but I'd account for it just for learning sake.

I appreciate the reply and the info. Unfortunately, being very new to AG and BIABacus, I'm struggling to keep up on both nomenclature and the BIABacus. I'm currently using revision K as that's the only one I could find. If there's a 'T', I don't know where to find it.

Unless there's differences in T from K in this regard, I'm not sure what you mean by entering the table sugar as 'boil only'.

I figured out what you wanted me to do in section Y, but I'm not sure what changes it made to the rest of the page...could you enlighten me?

Thanks for all the help!

Pat has linked 1.3T a few times this past week, I guess I just assume everyone sees it.

Anyway, this it the link I have saved for it ... which also gives you a scoop on the changes.

It's a pain to enter your information into a new file again, but that's what we have to deal with until it's coded!

Here is a good source to understand why we need section Y. Look at the sugar value in Section C. of your file, and then change values of section Y ... you will notice the total weight changes. What you are accounting for is the extra fermentability of the sugar. Sugar is more fermentable than base malt, so you need less of it to gain the same amount of gravity points.

1.3T will adjust your mash volume to a proper level, because telling it "boil only" lets it know you are putting less into the mash.
