Keeping the bag & grains raised while raising mash temp?

Hi all, just curious as to the best method for preventing any grain and bag burning while we raise the temp (e.g. Step mash or mash out)?

I have a ceramic glass stovetop & have stirred while heating, but was thinking I could use something like a wire baking rack or similar to keep the bag from resting on the bottom. Any problems with this?

FYI I use a pot with no tap/ valves

I am also keen to try some decoctions as Ralph is such a fan, but the rack or space method would be easier for most brews. Constant stirring would also cool the mash and therefore add time into the ramping...

I also don't have a pulley system in play, I don't mind hoisting and squeezing at the end of mash by hand but a step mash would be a big pain in the ass (and triceps!)

I think the biggest reason for lifting the bag while heating is to avoid burning the bag and grains.
Personally I don't lift because I can keep the bag off the bottom. I do stir while heating.
I have read several times on forums about people using bakers racks in their pots.
Some people are like slinkies. Not good for much, but bring a smile to your face when pushed down the stairs.

go ahead and get a baking rack in there. False bottoms simply for esuring grains and bags don't scorch on the bottom of pots or on elements are common place in this community.

Make sure u get an Stainless steel one

Ps. It's suggested that u still stir while applying heat.

Cool, thanks guys I will give it a go next time.

Lumpy, do you have a tall kettle or the bag pegged so the bottom is off the base?

Don't know if it would be an option for me as i maxi with a 19L (26cm high x 32 wide)but I've seen people who tie around the bag on the outside and also use pegs. Don't know if that would hold up 4kg + of wet grain though in a pretty short pot for me.

My kettle is 40cm x 40cm and the bag I have is actually pretty snug. I am able to roll tbe top of the bag down over the outside enough to keep the bag up off of the bottom.
As for the pegs; I wouldn't think that a normal clothes peg would work. I have seen people using large black binder clips around the top.

I have some metal ones which I use although that was more to keep the excess bag from spreading wort down the outside of the pot and also getting onto the element.

Will report back after trying a few different methods - either the rack or clips (if they are strong enough) seem pretty easy.

The other thing you want to avoid Pat is over-heating the bottom of the grain bed. If you use a cake rack and don't stir (or even lift the bag in a narrow kettle) what will happen is the wort underneath the bag will get really hot (way too hot) and the wort above will remain much cooler resulting in an extreme temperature difference. If your kettle is large and wide, you are more likely to be able to lift the bag and have the wort circulate all around it making stirring so often far less necessary.
