Hello all,
my grain bag is WAY too big for my pot. Is there anything stopping me from doing the mash withough a bag then just using the bag as a stainer? To me it seems a simple solution but I will leave that up to the experts. Thoughts?
My bag is 29*29 and my pot is only around 2.2-2.5 gallons

I have done just that. However, I did cool in the boiling pot with a secure lid with the lid/top of pot wrapped with plastic wrap to give me a nearly air tight seal. Once the wort was cool I lined the fermenter with the bag(that I had just boiled for sterilization), and poured the cooled wort into the fermenter and pulled the bag.
I am not sure if this is a myth or not, but it seems that you should not splash hot wort around or it can oxidize?

SenorPartagas - What 2trout is saying is if you strain whilst hot you may cause oxidising (which is a whole subject on its own with anecdotal stories and non-scientific evidence).
In my own opinion I think you could actually get away with doing all 3 if handled correctly; strain hot, strain cold, or mash normally & pull the bag.
I am assuming that as 2trout has done the "cold strain", that there are no problems with the method.
One thing that may cause a very slight difference is if you strain cold, the wort will be slightly denser, and therefore more likely to be retained by the grain more than if it were at mashout temps.
If the bag has lots of folds, it may constrict the mash (this could be corrected with lots of stirring though).
Does anybody else have experience in this area to help SP?

I have to say this is the most confusing thread I have ever read on BIABrewer. I think we better get clear on post #1 first

I want to go back to your first post. Yes, there is a lot stopping you from doing a mash without a bag. The idea of BIAB is to mash and boil in a single vessel. When you say that you want to use the bag as a strainer, this implies that you will be draining your 'sweet liquor' (mashed water) from one vessel to another one. In other words, you need two vessels and a lot of mucking about.
Let's get that bit cleared up first.
Not sure why this was not asked earlier. Maybe I am drunk and not rediong things right?

Senor, give some more detail if you can.
I have to race now but I'm not sure what I was correct on.
Please give as much detail as you can on what your problem is. This site assumes that you will only use one vessel unless you state otherwise.

Okay Senor, I've got it now that I am sober
. I'm still blaming trout though for confusing me with his 'cooling' post above

So the only problem with this is the obvious one of it being a bit clumsy and awkward and requiring two pots. A second person would help with the awkwardness. Besides that, there isn't really any other problem. The careful pouring form one vessel to another won't cause any problems at that temp.
