Hello all. Brand new to the site. So far I've made 3 batches of extract brew, which all agree taste great until 15 seconds after the last amount of the mouthful disappears. Then the aftertaste is very bitter. I think I've been very diligent with sanitation, so I wondered if this aftertaste is the extract "twang" I see people mentioning. I want to try a BIAB batch and see if the result if different. Not sure what else to mention, so following your suggested topics:

1. Where are you from? A: Eastern part of the U.S.
2. How did you stumble across the site? A: Northern Brewer did a BIAB piece on their Brewing TV episode. That led me to the Beersmith site which let me to this site.
3. What you think of it so far? A: RE BIAB: I'm going to change kettles before I try this method, so figuring out all the details here may take a while. I really don't want to buy all the all grain equiptment to do a regular all grain batch (for example the 2 big orange coolers I see for sale everywhere in US brewing sites), so hopefully the BIAB method will work for me.
4. Have you brewed at all before. If so, for how long and what method are you currently using? A: Yes, 3 extract (with specialty grains) batches since October. Irish red ale, a full body hopped brown ale, and an irish stout. The oldest one (the irish ale) brewed at the end of October, is seeing some of the aforementioned aftertaste mellow out with age.
5. Do you work? Are you retired or maybe you run a household? A: Perhaps I work too much, but am happy to be employed given the state of the global economy. If I won the lottery, however, I'd be content to retire to a leisurely life of fishing and enjoying the occasional homebrew.
Best regards,
BR

Gday everyone im andy from southeast melbourne, been brewing extract and kits n bits for a few years now. love the fun of brewing but want to learn more and take next step into biab. Starting to setup my vessel, a 50 ltr cub keg that i will be adding tap and maybe electric or gas heating?[ might go electric as i have young kids and would be safer], also cut top off and make or buy lid etc. Untill then might try a mini biab with what i got in kitchen [ 15 ltr pot] anyway great to find this site and look forward to chatting with u all , cheers everyone.

Hey everyone!

I'm from London, England and I'm looking into the mini-BIAB technique, as I really want to get into all-grain brewing, but can't afford the cost of new equipment at the moment (I have 1x10ltr stockpot, 1x25 ltr fermentation bucket & 1x25 ltr pressure barrel, all generously donated to me! :P ).

I found this site through google and I've spent about 24 hours online so far trying to weigh up my options, and trying to gauge the best options for my resources and tight finances! :?

I've brewed two extract beers before, but my refined ale taste buds do not want to waste any more effort on inferior brewing techniques!

I am currently a part-time student & part-time worker, and striving to be a bit more self-sufficient, through growing my own veg, brewing my own beer and I'm learning to sew my own clothes too! Keeps me busy anyways!

I'm looking forward to my adventures in ale!! :yum:

Welcome to BIABrewer guys :salute:...

BrewRay: The 'extract twang' you described (bitter after-taste) is something that a lot of palates, like mine, are sensitive to. A lot of brewers aren't sensitive to it but if you are, you'll find all-grain a massive relief. I gave up brewing three times because of extract twang! Ask about your equipment you intend to buy and you'll get looked after well here :peace:.

andy: Lots of great brewers in Melbourne. Quite a few electric guys here that will be able to help you out although the young kids might be a bit mnore scared of flame than an innocent looking electric kettle :o.

brewingdaze: Good on you bd! hashie put up a good post here today re cheap kettles. Maybe you can aim for that down the track? There are some guys here that brew very small batches. You might set a record though for brewing in a 10 litre stockpot! Start a thread here on something like, 'cheap kettles' and see how you go. Someone will come up with something I'm sure ;).

Good evening everyone, this is my first post! I live in NW Ohio and am getting started with brewing. Have made wine from both juice and grapes for quite a while. This is a great site! Have learned much already. The BIAB concept really appeals to me- seems a great way to get into all grain brewing. Have done several extract with specialty grain brews but I want something I can truly call my own. Am looking forward to educating myself and doing my first BIAB!

Hey Everyone

1. I'm currently living in Halifax NS Canada, but have lived in several cities all over Canada and have brewed in all of them
2. I came across this site when I found out about BIAB and allowing me to make the transition from extract brewing to all grain with all of the equipment I already had.
3. I think that BIAB will allow me to transition into all grain brewing easily, and allow for much more experimentation in brewing which is an aspect of home brewing which I enjoy.
4. I have brewed off and on for the last 5 or so years, going from hoped extract kits, fermented in camping water jugs and bottling in pop bottles (while a university student), to currently brewing extract beers with proper carboys and real bottles.
5. I have a full time job which sometimes takes me away from home for long periods of time, which sometimes makes for interesting brewing time frames, as sometimes a beer gets left in it's current state for months at a time.

Good Day Xarious, Welcome! Your correct, BIAB is the best way to move from Extract to All-Grain!

BIAB brews can be made in a about 1 hour more than Extract/Partial Mash.

I hope you get some time to go full BIAB!

Hi all,
Thanks for the great resource. I'm from the bay area, ca. Been all grain brewing with a friend on his 3 vessel system and started researching to piece my own kit together. I'm going to make a run at BIAB. Save me some money on entry and if I can do it well, I just may never move on. Of course, if I can't do it well, I probably won't do well on a 3 pot rig either!?!

Thanks for having me.

Hello All,

I'm from SE Michigan here in the states. I have done extract for about 16 months and I am ready to step it up to BIAB. When I'm not brewing, I am a prosecuting attorney (major crimes). I prefer brewing. Regards, Kevin.

I'd like it on the record that I have never brewed a wheat beer . Phew!

Welcome aboard Kevin. You'll find stepping into BIAB easy and should really enjoy the added versatility.

All the best on your maiden voyage,
PP

Good Day Pinback, Welcome to the Forum,
Great to hear your thinking of moving from Extract to all_grain.
You have 3 vessels so you can go 1 vessel(full vilume BIAB), or 2 vessel(BIAB with Sparge).
If you have any questions, let us know. Someone is always here!
