Another Nail in the Coffin of Hot Site Aeration

Post #1 made 9 years ago
Here is an interesting real world experiment regarding "hot side aeration." Some of the old myths are dying!

Did not have time to read it in depth, but it appears to be very thorough.

Twas very interesting 2trout
. Made think twice how much I actually do HSA on some of my beers and is that part of the reason for a quick start to fermentation. Guess I'll have to watch myself tomorrow .

jhough,

Are saying that you do aerate wort while hot? According the the experiment you should be fine.

From what I see about that experiment, is HSA is not a problem.

Is Cold Side Aeration, oxidizing the wort to help Fermentation, a Problem??

I guess 30 minutes is the real Question.

Also, hot Wort does not hold Oxygen nearly as much as cold wort. see http://tapintohach.com/tag/wort-oxygen/

So, HSA may not really happen at all.

I just did not really understand jhough's post.

Yes hot side aeration is NOT a problem.

Contrarian, You may correct!!!

We should Cover the kettle with a clean, sanitary towel, and let it sit until Cool.

Then carefully aerate the Crap out it and Pitch!!!

I vote for Slow-Chill!!!

Trout, I do stir the wort while boiling . I did not relize this until I read the post. I do aerate the wort to keep from boil over after hop additions. Yes, I do also spray the flare up with star -san. I was just not realizing that I did this. Personally , I did not think it was a problem .

Joshua, . From all I have read cold side aeration after the yeast is pitched , is where all the problems start.
Yes ,I could do an experiment ,but, I have a different one that I am going to do.

jhough, Cold Side aeration does happens, when ever I open the Closed Fermenter to check O.G.

The C02 layer gets opened and Oxygen get to the Beer, and Changes the stages of Yeast growth.

Josh, understood. I was thinking more of the shaking or stirring of the fermenter . Understand opening the fermenter and letting O2 in. I was under the impression that cold side aeration was shaking or stirring the wort after yeast was pitched , which causes problems with the beer.
