Bath Ales Gem Recipe

Post #1 made 12 years ago
Hi All,

Just entering the world of BIAB method after a coupl of years of extract brewing. Have a 50L pan with hop strainer and tap on order now. Thinking of recipe. Would really like to try a Bath Ales Gem which I've found. Recipe below. Does this look ok?

I used to use Beer Engine. I have beersmith 2 which seems very complicated and haven't got to grips with it really. Looked at the BIAB calculator from this site and see it's really useful for volumes. What do people recommend? Can i simply plug the details of the recipe below into the BIAB calc. and gt the volume of water and crack on? Thanks

5 UK gallon batch
OG 1041

MARIS OTTER PALE MALT 3590 gms
WHEAT MALT 40 gms
CRYSTAL MALT 320 gms
CHOCOLATE MALT LOW 40 gms

HOPS boil time 90 minutes
30 EBU

CHALLENGER 33 gms

Add 20 gms GOLDINGS last 15 minutes

Hi James

I have done one of these and it is indeed a lovely pint. :drink:

My recipe was very slightly different in quantities of malt and hops but the ingredients were very similar, EKG instead of Goldings the only difference. When I researched it the bitterness was closer to 25 EBU than 30, but they are not a million miles apart and yours could be closer.

Here are my quantities for a 5 gallon batch.

Maris Otter 4000g
Crystal Malt 200g
Wheat malt 200g
Chocolate Malt 15g

Challenger hops 25g @ 90 mins
EKG hops 25g @ 10 mins

Since brewing this I haven't been able to get hold of a bottle to compare so I can't say how close this is but I can say I will be brewing this again!

Best of luck and let us know how you got on.

Thanks Adman, sounds promising then!

I wonder if anyone can help me with the waht appears to be excellent BIABacus recommended above. I can't seem to get a tinseth value to come up despite inputting hop AA%, Mins & Grams. Am i missing something obvious?

Just tried the first pint. Very impressed! A lot more malty/nutty than any extract brew I've done before. Lovely stuff! Can't wait for the next brew session!

That's great news James!
I continue to be pleasantly surprised by the quality of the beer I end up with from my brewing. And the Gem is a favourite of mine.
It does inspire you to brew more when the results are this good.
Keep up the good work!
