Make Your Own Beer Crates

Post #1 made 10 years ago
First let me say this is not my idea but I have made several crates and they work well. For reference here is the link I used Beer Crates.
Image
Top crate with bottles holds 12 22 oz bombers.
This is how I made mine.
This will actually let you make 2 full crates with 5 total piece since the 1x2 strip can be used across 2 differen crates by only using it for the vertical pieces.

Summary of the breakdown for one crate for 24 X 12 oz bottles:

1x3 Furring strips: 18.5 | 18.5 | 18.5 | 18.5 | 10.5 | 10.5
1x3 Furring strips: 10.5 | 10.5 | 17 | 17 | 17 | 17
1x2 Furring strips: 10 | 10 | 10 | 10

Crate assembly start by attaching the 1x2 to the outside of the short sides. Attach the top side even with the 1x2 but raise the lower side the width of the bottom slat. Next turn the two ends upside down and begin attaching the bottom slats. Next attaché the top long sides, each side ¾ inch lower than the top of the crate. Attach the lower long side ¾ inch lower than the bottom of the crate. This allows you to stack the crates.

Joshua,
The crates will fit the 6 pack carriers for long necks like Sam Adams but not short bottles like Sierra Nevada. If you want to fit the carriers for Sierra Nevada you could increase the width by 1/2 inch and the length by 1/2 inch and it should work. But to be on the safe side I would measure to ensure that increase is enough.

I stained the crates using vinegar and steel wool that I let sit for about 3 weeks. It gives the crates an aged look that you cannot see in the picture. I can't find my regular camera and I took the photo with my phone.

I've only just seen this thread but I have been making crates similar to these for a while.

The only difference is that I have been recycling old wooden pallets for the lumber.

A full size pallet will, with careful measuring, make 2 crates which stack for storage (both full and empty).

The screws and nails I had "knocking around" so all they cost me are my time.

"Free" is my favourite price for projects like this!

Nifty!
One of the local hardware stores (Sears) receives garden tractors, the boxes are supported inside with scrap wood slats 1/2" x 3" x several feet. I should try to convert some to beer crates. Perhaps places with motorcycles or ATVs will also have scrap wood.
I should have thought of that.
