Crown urn modifications?

Post #1 made 15 years ago
Hi all,

I have just bought a 40 l Crown Urn to begin AG brewing using BIAB.

Does anyone recommend replacing the tap with a s/s ball valve? Any technical tips on how to do this?

What about the sight glass? Seems like a potential bug trap after a few brews. Is it worthwhile to remove it and plug the holes - or even insert a mashmaster thermometer in the lower hole?

Cheers,

Tony

Hi Tony

Have not done any mods to mine. Only done 4 brews so far but not had any issues. Reckon the sight glass should not be a problem as it is subject to boiling water which should kill any bugs.

The only hassle I've had was build up of grain flour on top of where the heating element is, caused the safety cut out switch to activate a few times during the boil resulting in a lower evaporation rate. I just gave the area a scrape with my paint stirrer and it has been good since, got 3.5 litres per hour boil off the last 2 brews.

cheers

Ian

Yes fitted a silicone hose, permanently attached. As I no chill reckon the near boiling water will kill any bugs. I put a couple of litres of water in the urn before I start a brew, just swirl it around then allow to drain. No problems so far.
