Newbie set-up

Post #1 made 9 years ago
Hi,

Really want to get in to home brewing. Haven't heard great thinks about kits and extract seems expensive, so after much research I feel brew in a bag is my best starting point.

This is the set-up I was thinking about (hopefully not breaching any advertising rules)

http://www.balliihoo.co.uk/balliihoo-co ... -p-19.html

And this size/style of kettle

http://www.themaltmiller.co.uk/index.ph ... ductId=221

Is this a good setup (excluding the bag of course)

Second part: for mini-BIAB I have noticed most recipes are 40pt so can you do the mash and then top up to wanted level before you boil or do you just scale everthing down?

Thanks in advance!

Brumpj, To Start with BIAB you only need a Kettle, about twice the size of the Finished Batch you need.

A fermenter with about 3-4 Liter More volume than the finished batch you need.

A very Good Thermometer, the Most Important tool.

A hydrometer or Refactormeter to measure the Specific Gravity, the Second most Important tool.

A long handle spoon or a Potato masher, to mix the Mash.

A good heat source that can get a good Boil for about 1.5 times the Volume of the batch needed.

Of Course, a Bag, large enough, that it can carry the kettle.

Then, You can Download "BIABACUS" at http://www.biabrewer.info/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=1869

and get "The BIABacus - Help" at http://biabrewer.info/viewtopic.php?f=55&t=1863.

And a recipe that you would like to Brew.

BIABACUS can adjust a recipe from 19L to 4L or 200L, or any size you need to brew.

Hope this helps.

I've been reading up on the maxiBIAB technique, would you recommend just going for a simple set up, producing 20pt-uk to start then progress later?

If barreling to condition does it matter the size of the barrel?

Thanks for the reply already.

Brumpj, 20pt-uk is about 3 gallon U.S. or 12 Liter, which is a Good Size Batch.

I used a 32 Quart/8-gallon(US) or 31 Liter or 54pt-UK Kettle for a 20pt-uk BIAB, and gravity to 1.080SG

Maxi-Biab is Possible If you have a 2 vessel system, and want a lot more effort.

The 31L Kettle will work for a 5 gallon/23L/33pt-uk batch using Maxi-Biab.

The Barrel Conditioning does depend on the Volume of the Barrel, and the Head space you need in the Barrel.

Thanks Joshua,

How do you find out the required head space and work out the size barrel you need? Is there a formula for that?

I think I'm tempted to look into 20pt brews. Seems do-able I think...

Brumpj, if your Barrel is wood, it will release a bit of Pressure, so, the fill should be very close to full, as the headspace can be 7-10mm

If the Barrel is a Corny Keg, the fill should stay around 25mm or 1 inch below the Gas fill tube.

Also, the 20pt-uk volume will fill 1-case of 24 bottles of US 12oz/354ml beer bottles.
