Great British Homebrew Challenge

Post #1 made 10 years ago
Just received an email about the 2014 homebrew challenge if anybody is interested.

Have a look at This Website.

Can be found on the brewuk website, sponsored by Waitrose, and judging at Thornbridge brewery.
Anybody fancy their chances?

I'm out unfortunately :nup: , don't use glass & crown caps.

Lame excuse Mally. I'll send you a capper and some caps.

I might give this a go, don't know what I could brew for it though  fancy doing a porter and perhaps an IPA.

Any suggestions ??

:salute:

Very funny Yeasty!

I entered the comp last year (St. Austell) but they weren't beer snobs and didn't give a hoot if the beer was in PET bottles.
I don't have a need for a capper etc. as I have about 200 ox-bars, but if you have a spare one I would gladly take it off your hands!

If I had done them in glass I would have sent my RIS I did last year & probably the hobgoblin. Although I have been thinking about BobBrews chocolate covered beaver nuts.....
Seriously I have even filled a BIABacus for that recipe but am having trouble sourcing the powdered peanut stuff, just something really different I suppose

Well chilled I'd think that you could transfer it to a bottle but it would be a hassle.

I've a upright bench capper but still have my old 2 handle lever capper somewhere. If I can find it you can have it  its a pain to do a full batch with it but for a few bottles its fine.

:idiot: I did 12 bottles in PET and cornied the rest. Suppose I could fill a few bottles from the keg  . Would be interesting to see how they did..

Well i have brewed my version of Bob's version of the Chocolate covered Beavr Nutz.

Just about to rack to secondary and add the chocolate & peanuts.
Luckily I have a colleague with a capper & some caps, so I might just get to send this one in. (Thanks for trying anyway Yeasty).

Deadline is 31st July so that is 3 weeks to condition, bottle, and be delivered! :o

I have renamed this one as it is probably so far removed from the original.

Wish me luck

mally,

Good luck with your beer! Mine is gone. The last gallon was finished on the 4th of July. I had compliments on it and everyone seemed to like it better than I did. My crappy taste buds deny me the aromas and flavors that most people enjoy! Good luck! I am betting on you!
tap 1 Raspberry wine
tap 2 Bourbon Barrel Porter
tap 3 Czech Pilsner
tap 4 Triple IPA 11% ABV

Pipeline: Mulled Cider 10% ABV

Thanks Bob ;)

A quick question for you if you can advise please?
Does the flavours & aroma of chocolate & peanut mellow or lessen at all?

I have had a taste this morning & it is just like having a "snickers" bar (Hersheys)? with a shot of vodka!
Basically, strong alcohol and chocoloate & peanut. If it doesnt mellow I may have overdosed this one and next time would only use half :dunno:

mally, :champ:

The taste mellows and rounds out as time passes. Leave it alone for now. I had a mass tasting at my 4th of July party. Some tasted the peanut butter and chocolate. Some only tasted the chocolate? None complained about alcohol or off flavors. The beer was well received. It really depends on a persons sense of taste and smell as to what comes through. For me I was disappointed because "I don't smell good?"

If you are hurrying this along because of a competition? I don't know what to tell you? Just enter it and remember that taste buds vary and they could work in your favor?

OK Thanks Bob (& Yeasty).

One other question (it never ends) :lol: ;
Looking at the peanut trub on the bottom of my barrel (approx 4 inches) :argh:
I plan to rack the beer off this & chill for a while, but I am wondering if you had any thoughts about this leftover peanut mess?
i.e can you or have you used it for something else, or do you just throw it in the trash?

Well I did end up sending this in to the comp.
It was such a weird beer that I thought I might have won for the "weirdness" factor but :nup: .

It is quite a nice drink Bob, but mine suffers from no head (or retention) so got scored lower (I don't know whether it is due to the chocolate or peanut or both)!

The feedback from the score sheet was;
Your beer made it to the final 10 in the category. In the final it scored 34 out of a max of 60. The wining beer scored 48. Comments included interesting flavours but some remarked that they were not ones that appealed. Poor head retention was also noted

Still, not bad I say,
Cheers Bob :drink:

mally,

Sorry, somehow I lost track of this thread? Sorry you didn't place better. (What do they know anyway?) It was a fun beer to make. Most of my friends loved it. The peanut butter gunk was deep as the ocean. I think, (I really can't remember) I bought 30 or 40 loves of bread and made a lot of peanut butter sandwiches.

There must have been enough of fat in the powdered PB to cause the head to fail? It still was tasty and everyone said "I have to try that!" That in itself was fun for me. Next year you will win for sure! Did I ever give you my recipe for "Sardine and Anchovy" beer?

tap 2 Bourbon Barrel Porter
tap 3 Czech Pilsner
tap 4 Triple IPA 11% ABV

Bob, I am quite pleased with the result really. :P

It was a recipe I had never tried, and I used some ingredients I had never seen before, let alone tasted, or even tried in beer. So to make it into the top ten in the category was quite good I think. :salute:

I don't know whether there were 10 entrants or 200 for that category though :argh: (I do know there were over 200 entered into all 8).

Edit -

I must admit the anchovy beer doesn't appeal to me. What about ham & pineapple?
