Three Gallon BIAB Movie... Part One

A few experiments (& questions) using the BIAB technique on ten gallon batches got me to thinking...What would I do if I wanted to brew up a batch of all grain on a smaller scale? Before firing up the burner for the first time I decided to give it some thought & came up with this idea...

Have you tried it out yet?
Not sure about the paint strainer bag though, is the mesh fine enough? just a thought.

As Mally said. Since you are so handy you might try making your own bag. Sheer drapery material (Swiss viol). A friend was on a remote brewing session with friends. He forgot the brewing bag?? :whistle: He just drove town do Walmart and bought a set of drapes for a few dollars. He made it work! So can you. Check out the bag in this short video.

I've tried just pushing a large piece of material into the pot, not sewn into a bag. It works, but you have to handle the excess material. If you make a bag, there are designs elsewhere on this site. Make sure you taper it toward the bottom, though. I have one that is not tapered and the grains go to both bottom corners when draining, which is a nuisance.

The paint strainer bags are indeed coarser than what is typically recommended here for a BIAB bag. You could double up by putting one bag in another. The average resulting pore size should be smaller than with a single bag.

Thanks for the input :). As a result I trashed the idea of using a paint strainer bag. I know my talents & limitations; so passed on sewing up my own bag & ordered a custom bag from here instead.

I ordered one a while back to fit my 15gal/57L kettle with great results. It's a bit large for this kettle; but if I roll the edges up it should work ok until the custom fit one arrives...right :?:

There's a good chance that my first three gallon BIAB brew will be a lager. Most likely a Bohemian Pilsner. Today I spent some time experimenting with an easy way to chill a small batch of wort to 48F/9C in the least amount of time using ice & gravity. I had to make my own immersion chiller plate to fit the small 7gal/26.5L kettle I'm using. The day went something like this...

Had a chance to try things out last weekend. Brewed up an American Brown Ale using the 3 gallon BIAB setup described earlier. Here's a copy of the recipe I came up with using what I had on hand
