Hey there HC, sorry to hear we won't be getting to meet you :(. It would have been a long way from where you were staying. Next time we'll see if we can get something sorted

Mash in at 10am so we can get all the 'testing' side out of the way earlier. Aces, skippy and phMan are arriving early (10 to 11). It should get more relaxing from 12:30 on but feel free to arrive anytime.
If you have a thermometer and want to compare it with some others at mash temp, arrive on the early side.
For entertainment I have tried to line up BobBrews to do some exotic pole dancing via Skype. Haven't heard back as yet - he's probably getting ready.

Still no news on the entertainment from BobBrews. He hasn't been online for 24 hours. If he falls through, Lylo will take his place.
Hopefully I have sent everyone the address by now, If not, let me know.
This will be a fairly complex brew day (mainly the mash) because of the extremes we are doing. Should be a great test run for the new BIABacus. Now to weigh out 31 kilos of grain
.

Just finished pitching, cleaning and counting the silver of course. Usually on a brew day, I get someone else to brew as I can't multi-task. This means now I don't know who to thank for what, as any food etc I bought for the brew day is still here plus more as well as a few interesting bottles of beer.
The Brewers
A great bunch of brewers turned up including several brewers from this forum as well as some brewers who came to my first brew day in Perth 5 years ago. Quite a few guys aren't forum members here but thanks a heap to uneekwahn for doing the hard yards in the kitchen, supplying and cooking home-made pizzas like a master chef. Hugely appreciated mate 
.
Thanks a heap to AcesHigh for bringing all those sausages which we never even needed to cook thanks to the pizzas. (I hope no one went hungry due to my focus on the brew
). And I have no idea who brought the other stuff I saw but much appreciated.
Thanks to cptsuds, skippy, lukasfab and Mr Boring for helping with the brewing
. I had Mr Boring working on the brew before he even was given a beer .
Sinkas brought along about a kilo of hops to give away - always a generous brewer.
Also thanks for the help cleaning up at the end of the day. This made a real difference although Barry's couch was pretty wet this morning.
And thanks to MrBoring for staying around at the end and having a chat once I could relax. Next time, I'm not brewing so I can have a decent chat with everyone. I hate missing out on that!
And thanks to the admin guys. NME travelled a long way to join us and Pat even came back today to help clean up.
The Beers
Aces brought along a yummy keg of 'Hop Hog' which is the recipe we were brewing. Skippy brought along a keg of Dunkel Weizen which my neighbour wanted to take home with him. Lukas had some Heffe Weizen. I know, I know, I usually ban wheat beers from my home but these were pretty good so what can you do? Sinkas brought his usual amazing collection of exotic beers such as a Raspberry Brown Ale and many others.
There will have been more but I never had a chance to slow down and focus on them. Next time.
The Experiment
Well, after a week of working late and no sleep on Friday night I was pretty keen to see the results of the "multi-experiment". Even managed to get the 15kg grain bills which had to be made up of about ten different grains to be within 8 grams of each other.
And didn't that prove to be a waste of time?

The high gravity part of the experiment was a disaster
. I had never struck such a high gravity grain bill before and stupidly worked off the standard strike water temperature formula calculator which I shouldn't have done as it always gives a too high answer for me. So brew 1 had an initial temp of 71C instead of 66C - lol! Diluted with 8 litres of water but no change until suddenly it dropped to 61 C. So, right from the start that side of the experiment was doomed. It got worse though ...
Twenty to thirty minutes into the mash on Brew 1, trying to raise the temp from 61 to 66, it suddenly jumped from 65 to 76C
. Why? We finally realised that the probe must have been faulty and was getting stuck.
So that side of the experiment was a total fail.
The weirdest thing though was that Brew 2 which had less water than brew 1 had a pre-boil gravity 20 points lower than Brew 1. Wtf?
Anyway we evened out the worts so they had the same gravity and then diluted the worts so we had our desired pre-boil gravity. The experiment now was down to just chill versus no-chill experiment using pure BIAB and a pure no-sparge mash.
Pitched my two brews this afternoon when temps between the no-chill and chill had equalized. Volumes are the same.
Tasting the Results
We'll meet up again in about 4 weeks and taste the results. After that we'll head down to Fremantle for a bit of a beer tasting. I'll start a new thread on that closer to the day.

Sounds like you had a blast. The brew day seemed to go about like mine does. All the plans go out the window the first time something goes wrong! I am sure the beer will be great but no technical data to process. As long as you have friends around you the brew day party is a success.
I brewed that day as well. I remembered some pH test strips that I had just bought on a whim? I was astonished that my water had a pH of 6.2 (or more). Now I have to go and read about pH and it's effect on some beer types? Even a nut case like me has to do research once in a while!

I did enjoy myself Bob but not as much as I could have if we hadn't been experimenting. I hate not having enough time to chat with everyone properly as you miss out on so much. Any experiments I do from now on, I'll make sure I only do with one or two brewers. And, any open brew days I do from now on, I'll make sure are simple, single batches with a new brewer doing all the brewing. That way, I'll maximise my own enjoyment .
It was very enjoyable though despite the experiment. The experienced brewers were able to laugh at the inevitable intrusion of 'Murphy's Law" and the newer brewers had the grace to realise we were trying to do something very complicated. Good stuff all round.
Annoyed that the experimental side failed on the high gravity/sparge bit as I was really very interested to see the results
.
Looking forward though to the tasting of the chilled/no-chilled bit as I'll be able to fully relax then and enjoy my fellow brewers' company to the max.
My kegs are at least 30 litres lighter today so I only have to work on a few kegs in the next few weeks to make room for the two new batches from yesterday. This is always a good sign. Phew!, as I really had no plan for how to fit yesterday's brews into my fridge if we didn't drink lots yesterday!

Yesterday I to a crack at my chill/no chilled beers. I did a double batch and ran the first half into my cube and the rest I immersion chilled. I couldn't tell them apart? But I have no taste buds so I will let the experts at the AHC test them on air! The beer is still a bit raw and needs a month or two to fully develop but they will do in a pinch. Shibolet has his beer ready and we will be in Seattle in a week.
I am happy that you can laugh at "Murphy's Law" because that's the price we have to pay for "Brewing on the edge" Sometimes it doesn't work out and we have to drink our mistakes! Hey that's not a bad hobby! Not like a doctor that has to bury his mistakes? Brew on brother!

Yes it was a really good day, except for a few issues with thermometers which screwed up our mashing. We all got to taste plenty of different beers to taste.
Apparently I rambling on something fierce when the wifee drove me home.
I pitched my 2 batches yesterday evening and they're both bubbling away nicely. It will be interesting to see how they turn out with the lack of attention and poor brewmanship we managed to perform on the day
Pat and I are definitely better at socialising than brewing when there is a group of people around.

You were in charge of photos. Did you forget?
I did get my camera out before anyone arrived to find it with a totally flat battery. Put it on the charger and then promptly forgot it. Mate, my brain was massively over multi-tasked.
Heading down to the Norfolk with sinkas tonight for a, 'Meet the Maker,' session - (Mountain Goat Brewery). With this storm coming in though it might be a, "Meet my Maker,' session.
Btw, when do you want me to dry hop these fellas? (I'm thinking Thursday for mine).

Yeah i was useless in the brewing stakes, but i ....naw i got nuthin. I thought you drank 45 L while you were here?
