Absolute crazyness. We lost multiple homebrew shops around here in Oregon too. Some are still open. For me, Salem, Oregon had 2 - now have 1. Corvallis lost theirs. So instead of having 3 places within half an hour or so from me there is just one.

I'm a lurker on this site from many years back, took a couple year break from brewing and now I'm getting back into it again.

I know alot of people here already know this but the spreadsheets available here still blow me away, I'm sitting here with them getting things all tuned up for brew day and I'm amazed. Very nice of you to say.
We unfortunately recently lost the man responsible for the Biabacus. It was a man named Pat Hollingdale (Pistol Patch) who worked to create the sheets as well as being one of the creators of the whole Biab process. He was a great friend and mentor to a lot of us here and is missed.

Has anyone been brewing lately? Most of the bars and taprooms throughout the world are shut down right now. Almost nowhere to get fresh beer on tap unless you have some good homebrew on tap!

I brewed a Hazy IPA two weeks ago and kegged it yesterday. My front 5 taps are still full with other beer, but my Rauchbier and APA are almost gone, and the Hop Head Pale Ale is just behind them. For now I set the Hazy IPA up with a picnic faucet and out CO2 on it. I did not force carbonate it so it’s not...

Am33106 interesting that you and ShorePoints are both playing with that Norwegian Voss Kveik yeast strain. Yeah, in the next couple months we should have more info from both of you. Bob has had some successful brews already with it.

I brewed again (second time in the shutdown) 2 weeks ago tomorrow...so that would have been April 25th. Yeast again was super aggressive and blew over top of fermenter like the batch did last time, and jhough had last time. It seemed to finish early... Left in...

My biggest time in between brews since I started, but I’m back into it....sort of.
So much has happened in my life during the down time.
Today I set up to get back in the game with my favourite brew. I was so stoked to go through the planning, the set up, the milling, the checks, the mash. Just this process was a big part of my happiness for so long.

Kegged vs. Bottled Beer

When brewing beer I normally brew extra beyond the 5-gallons that fits in the Corny keg. Normally will have between 1 and 3 gallons in PTFE containers (to top off the keg when getting low). Also bottle some beer for competitions and mostly gifts. Sometimes will bottle in larger 1-liter or 1.25 liter Coke (etc) bottles. Anyway, that’s why I always try to brew over 9-gallon batches, not the 5-gallon batches that I did at the start. Always drink more, and 5-gallons that tastes great can be drained...

Meant to say hoppier. As in too many hops. (Spell correct or typo mistake).

The third paragraph I was saying that only a couple days previous I had been blending it with a less hoppy Helles to make it easier to drink. Was planning to take the crazy step of opening up newly bottled beer to blend them so I does not get massacred in beer competitions... Want my bottled beer to taste good - as is.

That sounds like an excellent piece of equipment to add, especially with living in Florida! :thumbs: I have one where I live in Oregon and it enables me to brew lagers at cold fermentation temperature in summer. I have a large rubber band that fits around my fermentation and a small piece of bubble wrap that sandwiches the temperature probe next to the fermenter. It works well for me. A pro brewer once told me the #1 thing I could do to improve quality of my beer was to control fermentation...

One thing I do know about this site is many hours and dollars are poured into it by a few silly members such as myself :). This is not a commercial site so we have no income or profit. That's beside the point though on this particular topic. What concerns me is...

Think you are talking about the wide use of RoundUp right before harvest in wheat fields all over the world. Someone I talked to that seemed very knowledgeable told me that at least 95% of those that think they are allergic to glutens are actually allergic to RoundUp! That’s bad for all of us. Scary...

Sounds more like a very good marketing strategy than a reality :P (For example, if you are only allowed 2 beers, no one is going to be able to prove that you could have had 15 different ones from the same tap.)

However, there is one germ of truth in there...

The article says, once a glass has been filled with beer, only froth is poured in the second time. If you want to taste/focus on the hop flavour of a beer (rather than , bitterness, aroma and malt), pour the beer with a substantial head...

Diacetyl as a Flavour rather than a Fault

Diacetyl, that butterscotchy/toffee flavour. It's pretty much always mentioned as a fault (correct me please if I'm incorrect on that) however, I often really like that flavour.

A few batches ago, on one brew day, I brewed an APA and IPA, that, for reasons I still can't work out, were really heavy on diacetyl. Besides not being able to fathom what caused that diacetyl in those beers (I have very good temp control), the other amazing thing was that some non-brewers thought it was the best beer...

I had my first ever bad brewday (Premature Mashout). The FG is at 7.6 °Brix after two weeks in the fermenter and am looking at about a 3% ABV.

I'm planning on kegging it all and see if this will make an enjoyable drink and if anything else just cook with it. Anybody have any input?

I've now got my bottling procedure down to a shade under one hour. 24 bottles clean and marked. I realised this morning how much I enjoy it, and find it is a bit like meditation. A little bit of deep breathing, relaxed movements, patience for each bottle to fill.
Even washing bottles doesn't feel like a chore. Just enjoying the ride, and looking forward to the bounty from each batch....

To all the brewers in Florida USA ...Please be safe !!!!! This is a devastating storm ....Supposed to be a direct hit to us here in the Tampa Bay area .
Please have your house & belongings taken care of...This one is no joke !!!

Now we all know BIAB makes beer, it you do it all right it will be good beer but it's killing my inner geek.

My poor geek is heartbroken looking at my shinny bits, pumps and valves, weeping over my Arduino n Ras pi.

I got a huge amount of pleasure from building stuff for my brewing but stuff means extra cleaning and I don't like cleaning but then who does?

Oh I plan on finding out the right recipe, like i said IT WAS REALLY GOOD.
I will take better notes next time, I also plan on converting over to metric as it seems a lot of guys here do metric
Being American, I am used to our system, but I have spent a career having to convert in my mind so it will be rather easy to tweak them up to metric.
As mentioned I do remember he additions, but just not exact amount. I think it is just a matter of doing a few brews to nail it.

If you want BS there is a big website that you can go to and post whatever you want, they specialize in making sure everyone feels just at home and no one can say your wrong. And it gets pretty funny reading the results. Most of which are, you do not have to do that, just do the minimum instead.

OK I want real information, stuff written by old hands, I have been over the hump and do not need guidance in areas...

I am doing a little research into American pre-proabition beer recipes, right now focus is on cream ales (not surprisingly different tasting then the type out today) and I came across a reference to the Australian Sparkling Ale as having a similar history as the American Cream Ale.
