   I'm attempting my first brew and I've chosen an Imperial Stout as this is one of my favourite styles and the recipe I'm following looks fairly simple. I've based my biabacus on the below recipe and attempted to scale it down to fit my 33l kettle.    One more thought. I do not know whether or not the BIABacus does account for water added to the boil when it compares GIB and OG to tie them to efficiency calculations. If it does, then it’s another great thing about it.

   Has anyone else ever had German Rauchbier and discovered they love it? Schlenkerla has an awesome Maerzen Rauchbier, and we can get it in bottles here in the USA. It's very good stuff...!

   A couple guys at my homebrew group thought it good but slightly harsh... Not my opinion, theirs. Kind of like a person having their first IPA, but this is not “over the top” at all, in my opinion. If brewing “for the masses”, perhaps I would drop the Rauch a percentage and add it back in more Munich malt. But I like how it turned out very well.

    Streamer - I stink at dry hopping. :idiot:
    
    For the Saison, I used hopsocks made of voile, same as the BIAB bag, but smaller. They were only in the secondary fermenter with 40 gms each of Amarillo and Simcoe on , then 10 gms each again on . The bag capacity was about 3 liters in volume, not packed tightly with expanded pellets. On removal for packaging day, I did let the bag drain back into the beer and compressed it a bit.

    Just kegged this batch. Tasted what was in the hydrometer vessel then drank the whole thing - it was good already, before conditioning/carbonation. Looks to be a pretty good batch. Initial and final gravity were right on the button. Quite an easy brew day too. (Maybe this one will help to make up for the 5 gallons I just dumped due to some type of nastiness getting in.)

    well, this is what I did in the end. A friend lent me a Braumeister to play with, so I did it in that, but no reason why it wouldn't work with any other BIAB method.

    Here is what I am looking at for my first biab. I am planning on following Ralphs guide to mini-biab. It looks like exactly what I'd like to do. I have played around with biabicus and have the file posted. I'd love to know if the numbers look alright. I was wondering what I would do if I wanted to use a different recipe.     The latest info/advice I have seen on whirlfloc use is 1/4 tab in the final 5 minutes of the boil.
    You will not do harm using a half tab.
    In the past I followed advice that changed over time from an entire tab in the final 15 minutes of the boil, to 10 minutes, then half a tab at 10 minutes, then 5 minutes.
    At least it keeps going down, instead of up. :think:

    I did the recipe and it is already in the fermentor. I got 1.050, what is almost the target. I think I still have to drop my evaporation rate a little more.
    I guess I am pushing my gas stove to the limits, but I started the boil with 12 liters and I managed a strong enough boiling.

    Hi all, I fancy doing a simple smash brew - nothing fancy, just an English style best bitter.
    
    I've got a fairly friendly brewer near me who is happy to supply malt, hops and yeast depending on what he's got in. He tends to have a lot of Maris Otter and a fair amount of EKG hops, so thought I'd use those...anyone got a recipe they'd like to share?

    just finished off the last bottle at the weekend. it was a good crisp brew. not huge amounts of subtlety or complexity in the flavour but a good brew nonetheless, and another notch on the belt in terms of brewdays. it fed well into the next brew which was a hopback summer lightning clone - much the same but more varied hops and more MO malt. I'd certainly recommend this recipe for someone who needs or wants to make a british bitter style SMASH. cheers all

    My first attempt at using the recipe template, it's for one I've brewed a few times now without much thought to accuracy of water quantities. I've plugged it into the BIABacus (also first time to use that with intent) to see what the water quantities really should be and my next brew day will follow the BIABacus, not the seat of my pants as all previous batches I've done of it.     Yes, I did. Brewed it with an Irish friend of mine and both he and I were very pleased with it. Drank it all at his graduation party a couple years ago. I haven't had the opportunity to try it again, but it will be on the top of my list...

    In the PDF it says it has an IBU of 70, but BIABacus says 32 (also, 70 is what I got from their Chinook IPA, using double the amount of hops, with similar AA%), so what BIABacus says makes more sense to me.

    Brewing my competition beer atm. What happens when you walk away from a boil with 9 1/2 ounces of first wort hops? A near boil over of course. :lol:
    I am slowly raising my hop spider, and the bag gives way from my flange. Into the boil she goes...
    
    Good thing I'm no chilling. I just won't be squeezing this hop bag, it is going nuts in the kettle.

    I was after recommendations for a book of recipes. I've got the Graham Wheeler book already, which is great, but it does tend to focus on classic british styles. Can anyone recommend a book with viable recipes for some of the more exotic or modern styles? eg wheat beer, saison, lagers etc.

    One of my early influences in brewing was a book that has been updated called Clone Brews. It has a lot of beers from around the world in a lot of styles. He also has a few charts that are helpful. Biggest part of this book I liked was the recipes are in extract, minimash and all grain.
    I moved on from that book and bought a few books on styles of beer I like, One was just about Marzens, one on Pale Ales, etc.
    After that I crossed referenced the information I was getting about individual styles...

    Yes, that's correct. 5L in Section N does dilute to 1.056/7 in Section O.
