   Hi there,
   
   Does anyone have a tried and tasted SMaSH recipe (single malt and single hops)?
   
   I have access to cheap Weyermann Munich, Vienna and Pilsner malts and want to see how simply I can brew a simple beer.
   
   Also one of the great local home brewers suggested that beginners should stick to simple (smash) beers so they can learn to differentiate the tastes between the different grains and hops. What do you think?

   Hi All - I recently tried Fourpure's Amber Ale - and loved it! Having never tried any other American Amber Ales I thought I'd try giving one a go. Found a general recipe and after a bit of work came up with the recipe below. Few questions about it below:
   
   1. The original bittering hop was Horizon but I can't track that down from local supplier. Will Magnum do a good job?
   2. Do i need the Cascade & Centennial? Given that the quantities are pretty small I'm not sure if I could get away with the...

   Good numbers/terminology are essential when you want to transmit a recipe correctly to another brewer and also if you want to answer questions correctly. This thread is a good example.
   
   This site is the only site that takes on teaching brewers when and which numbers/terminolgy to respect and disrespect. Few brewers have access to this knowledge and even some members here are a little lazy/dismissive of it which is unfortunate as it costs time and...

   I am a fan of Pliny, please don't :shoot: me!!!!!, and would like to try making this clone that came from Vinnie himself. I just have a few issues that I cannot figure out in the BIABacus. Mainly...where does Corn sugar go? I am not sure if this is throwing off the ABV estimate and FG.
   
   Any thoughts or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. This will not be a cheap beer to make so would like to do my best to do it right the first time.

   I had this recipe on the back burner, but probably won't brew it. Was lucky enough to get a few fresh bottles from a friend who was able to visit the brewery while away for Air Force duty.
   
   It's a fine brew, but I think considering that it went viral when IPA's weren't flooding the market ... leaves it a bit overrated and underwhelming these days.

   Folks,
   
   A few years back I went to one of the Lord Nelson's annual beer dinners. Much beer was consumed so the memory is quite hazy, but at the end of the night they cracked out one of their barrel aged beers. It was fricken amazing!! For me it almost tasted like whisky - a nice hit of strong but smooth alcohol, then an oaky finish from the barrel. There was a bunch of other flavours in there too.

   Had a look but could not see if anyone had previously done this one, so here goes....
   
   This is straight out of the BCS book. I used 20.19 as the VAW as suggested in this post.
   
   Planning to get this on in the next week or so and as I am going on hols in a few week I sould have it into the secondary FV and can then leave it for a good few weeks.

   I have done 2 lagers with this yeast now, and I don't think I would use it again. To me it just leaves too much flavour & fruitiness behind when I want clean & crisp.
   
   I would really like to hear how you get on with it (I don't want to put you off), it is likely just my tastes that it disagrees...

    A quick update on my demonstration brewday at university. It pretty much all went OK, all gravities lined up with recipe.
    In the end I went with a borrowed immersion chiller for cooling instead of nochill, my reasoning being that the students can see the process of sanitation and casting in the yeast mixture.

    So I have really been getting a kick out of this beer lately, and wanted to give it a go. The only clone attempt I can find out there is on byo.
    
    Looking at the brooklyn website, they say the beer has Hallertauer Perle, Willamette, Fuggle and Cascade. The byo recipe has only Willamette and EKG.

    I am no expert with recipes. So take what I say with a grain of salt. I try to trust a recipe the first time. I figure that the brewer tried many times to get the clone close and he or she is proud of what they have done? If however they are way off? I will go on from there on my own. But like I said, I try to replicate what they have done first. Not having heard of or much less tried the beer I am at a loss anyway as to say they hit the mark or not!

    I want to knock up a wee 11 litre batch to try out my new minikegs. I bought some grain and hops on the cheap from Ebay and I've come up with the recipe below (using the Gregg Hughes book as a reference).
    
    Can anyone tell me what it's likely to be like and any changes you might make? I've also got some S-33 yeast in the fridge, would that be better than US-05?

    Been out of commission for a while now but ready to get my next batch going. Finally got the BCS book and have decided to try my hand and one of the recipes. Not an easy thing to narrow down as all of the recipes look great.

    My hope is that every BCS recipe will be adapted to BIAB and available in the recipe section as a sticky or such. We'd be running into big copyright problems with that one schlitz. In fact the above probably shouldn't even be here :dunno: Regardless the BCS recipes can be converted by typing the quantities from the book into the BIABacus and just setting the VAW in section D to 20.19 litres. That's all there is to it. Nice and easy.

    Hopeing to get some input into these recipes, I have a large kettle and recently aquired a refrigerator that I have converted to a primary fermentation chamber by adding a STC-1000 controller. Please look at this stout recipe also and see if I am on track or need to modify it to get a good result, I will be making a 2 liter yeast starter for this as well as the Hefe from the previous post. I also have O2 available to oxigenate the wort prior to fermentation.

    Thank you JackRussel, I will post in the thread that you showed in the future, the only reason I posted twice is because I plan on brewing both of these beers in the next few days and our LHBS is only open at certain hours so I wanted to make sure I had the ingredients for both beers.     I attempted to clone Netherworld Cascadian Dark from Flying Monkeys here in Canada and ended up with a delicious beer that is quite possibly better than the beer I was trying to re-create. It's kind of a cross between an APA and a Porter. Flavours of coffee and chocolate, with the punch of Cascade hop flavor and aroma. I do plan on upping the 0 min and dry hops in the future by 50% to start, but this is one of my best brews to date.

    Lampy all of you're assumptions are correct. However I did not use a secondary fermentor. So air contamination was not a big deal. I assume your not using a carboy but instead a bucket. If so I would check with others about whether or not pulling the lid off is really a cause for contamination . The one time I used a bucket I know that it didn't cause a problem pulling the lid off to check gravity. But that's just one experience. Hope it goes well with you. And I am glad to help .

    Hop Rod Rye clone
    (Bear Republic Brewing Co.)
    (5 gallons/19 L, all-grain)
    OG = 1.072 FG = 1.017
    IBU = 84 SRM = 17 ABV = 7.2%
    
    Ingredients
    8.75 lbs. (4.0 kg) 2-row pale malt

    I know this is quite an old thread.. however, one of the original issues seemed to be the number if IBU's in this Rye IPA. The brew is one of my fav's and is brewed here in my hometown at Bear Republic Brewing. I haven't brewed it yet.. but, I will.
    
    When I compare the calculations using Brewers Friend, I come up with quite a different set of IBU's than the OP.
    For instance...
    0.963 oz of Columbus at 16.3%AA at 60 min gives 60.1 IBU's
    0.667 oz of Centennial at 8.9%AA at 30 min gives 17 IBU's...

    I am new to BIAB brewing and have purchased a 70ltr kettle and a 30 Ltr fermenter, and turned an old fridge into a kegerator.
    
    My first 2 brews were OK but not great. I understand the Biabacus quite well now and have brewed using it, (as long as all the information is in it)
    
    So I ask kindly for recipes, anything tried and tested, please avoid the dark beers not really my taste, but IPA, APA, hoppy crisp beers, maybe even a lager for the wife!!

    So I'm trying to make the all grain version of the Sierra Nevada Pale Ale clone from
    200 Clones...

    Finally bottled/kegged this yesterday.
    
    I can say without hesitation that it came out fantastic and is the best tasting beer I have made. It does not have that signature homebrew flavor I always seemed to get with extract brewing. Just tastes like great beer. In fact, because it is fresher than the Sierra Nevada we get on the east cost (i've had it both in MA and in CA and there is a dramatic difference), the flavors are more pronounced.

    Here's a new IPA recipe i'm planning on brewing tomorrow. Im happy with the grainbill and have used it on a number of IPA attempts, but up until now I always seem to be light on in regards to hops. While the beer tastes great its stuck half way between an APA & an IPA and doesn't have that big hop punch (flavour and aroma) that you get from Ferals Hop Hog, or Sierra Nervarda torpedo IPA.

    Hi Simon,
    It seems that CTZ is really just any of Columbus, Tomahawk or Zeus hops.
    Apparently all the same hop with different names or close enough that it doesn't matter.
    Meant to be good bittering hops.

    Oh yeah, good point Odymate, I forgot about that, so you can order any of the 3 and they're pretty much interchangeable. They were on special from Yakima valley hops in America at the time so I bought a few pounds. It was a nice clean bittering hop
