      I've not been brewing much over the last three years, I appreciate this place is very much a ghost town again, but I dusted off the BIAB sheet and got to brewing!
      
      I'm sure salty liquorice milk stouts aren't up everyones streets, however a friend of mine is very much into them.
      
      We knocked up this batch using a previous milk stout recipe we used for making a roasted cocao & coconut (bounty bar!) stout recipe.
      
      I've just kegged it up and am force carbonating it.

      Wow, that's some recipe. I have strayed somewhat from Reinheitsgebot but not as far as you.
      True salty licorice is an acquired taste. I had some in Amsterdam and a Dutch relative can get the good stuff, but most of what is available in U.S. stores is crap by comparison. I think the Salty Liquorice Milk Stout might be interesting to try, but not a regular brew for me. Credit goes to you for being so bold and thanks for sharing.

      Wish me luck - my 2nd wheatbeer, taken from onclick= window.open(this.href);return false; and basically dumped into BIABacus. I've added a few different bits and bobs of advice I've picked up elsewhere into the recipe but it's basically the same bar the pitching and the yeast.

      Just wanted to drop by and thank for this recipe!
      I tried this recipe (with some small adjustments to the available ingredients and my small pot) and it turned out great!
      Already did it a second time, with the added bonus of washing the yeast from the first batch.

      Ahhh, kettle CM was too high. I had 70cm wide, 70cm high. It's 70l! 45cm wide, 45cm tall! Good spot - have corrected both the download and the recipe above.

      tips on coconut: Roast 160'C (fan oven) for 4-5m. Use a paper towel to scrunch the oil off the coconut. Do this whilst the coconut is still hot from the oven as the cooler it gets, the less oil you get off it. We used just under 900 grams because the previous finer shredded stuff didn't impart a noticeable flavor to the stout.
      
      It'll probably swing the other way now...

      That looks like an interesting beer! Are you going for a reddish colour with the dark malts? I've done it before but it isn't to style in the traditional sense.
      
      I'm also wondering about the 20 minutes at 62 and the longer rest at 71. I would be inclined to swap the times around to make sure it finishes nice and dry.

      Getting 20L(VIF) instead of 23L(VIF) may have been a Boil Problem.
      
      If you boiled on a Clear, Dry Day, you could have boiled off Much more, than the Program projected.
      
      But, If it was Cool, and Raining, That would not be the Trouble.

   10. Reducing strength of NRB Amarillo

       I'm consistently getting a strength of about 6.5% to 7% on the BIAB recipe.
       
       It's a complete knock out, a couple of pints floor people. I find myself sipping a pint slowly over an hour - not really a session beer.
       
       How's best to bring down the strength whilst maintaining flavour?

       Are you happy with the carbonation level Tim?
       
       Reason I ask is that I brewed a 20% corn adjunct lager a while back, and even after a long time conditioning it was still strong, slightly harsh,and alcoholic tasting.
       I added some water to my glass before pouring and it turned into a great beer.
       
       Could you get away with diluting it during the pour? Just a thought :think:

   11. false bottoms

       Having now done a couple of brews, I'd like to use the element to maintain the mash temperature - after all what's the point of having all these fancy electronic gadgets to sit dormant whilst my brew drops in temp?
       
       Worried about scorching the bag though, so I think a false bottom is the way to go.
       
       My pot is straight walled - so I assume the only way of doing this is to drop a round stainless steel plate with holes in it with several bolts to keep it off the element in?

       Have a look at how the bayou classic kettles are designed with the new false bottoms, maybe you can rig up something like that. I bought one of these 16 gal kettles with a false bottom and it has enough room under it for the element. The kettle has a ring stamped in it though, but the principle is the same. Maybe one of those false bottoms will fit your kettle? they have a 10 gal size and 16 gal size I think with different diam.and they already have feet on them. I use a pump to circulate with...

   13. 5.5kw, PID temperature control @ boil point

       Last weekend when I made some sweet, sweet beer nectar, I used the PID to get to strike temperature, but when I got to boil everyone says 'switch the pid to manual mode'
       
       I found that to maintain a proper temperature, I had to have the PID constantly heating. It may be due to the ambient temperature being between 4-7'C and the extractor fan (a freestanding fan I found in a skip that blows the steam out the garage doors) keeping it cooler than it would normally be.
       
       Is this normal?

       100% power on my rig will blow the liquid right out of the kettle! 65-70% gives the desired vigorous rolling boil.
       
       ah fair enough! I have a 70ltr pot and when doing a 5g brew it's only about half full.

       I've decided to take the plunge into all grain using a 70l stockpot. Originally I decided I was going to do it on the cheap, but having installed a 32A socket in my garage I realised it was fairly pointless to cheap out on the pot.
       
       The biggest issue is whether to follow US based guides, or compromise with more locally sourced items. The cost of importing from the US is in most cases, the same price as you pay in the UK. Trouble is, much of the supporting gear such as chassis punches...

       Got a text from the wife that both fermenters are bubbling away equally - one has a bit of a head start, so if they're equal then it sounds fine.
       
       Means I've still got a spare vial of Yeast for the next batch, though I want to see how it turns out before going for another on the same recipe.
       
       I think wheat beers have to be drunk fairly young, and I was aiming to take some with me camping in August (I'm aiming to take several kegs with me to setup a bar), so looks...

       I have a cask.
       
       Obviously it has a large hole in the side that needs welding. Has anyone seen these converted for BIAB?
       
       I have the ripple 5.5kw element. I'm not entirely sure it's going to fit in there...
       
       Worse comes to worse I do have a large aluminium pot, but it's quite shallow. I'm installing a 30A line to the garage for this btw... No faffing with the dodgy electrics in the house, fresh new line!

       Hi - it's got magnetic results so I'm assuming it's steel. I may yet go down the route of using a pot.
       
       Just laid in the 10mm cable from the fuse box to the garage. Bought 25m, should have got 15... Never mind
       
       Drilled a couple of holes in my weatherboarding, ran the cable out of the roof, through my lean to. Then drilled a diagonal hole through the corner of the garage.
       
       I've got my friend (electrician) coming over to do the actual wiring in. I don't trust my wiring on 32A lines.
