For question 2, I got a build up of charred material but not as bad as what you got, going by the photo in your other post. In my case, there was no problem with the taste of the beer. If you can remove the material during the boil (it's acting as an insulating layer) then you may not need to modify...

I used to get the same charred build up with my urn, where the concealed element was in contact with the base. About every 15 minutes during the boil I scrape the base with a long spatula and this prevents the material building up.

I am using a 30L urn and I get by with it but I think that 40L would be better as the minimum volume to recommend. I bought a cheapie of ebay that is still going after 40 batches or so. I do use a "power regulator" which acts to protect the element to some degree (it is a phase fired controller). It...

Sounds like it's OK if the SG hasn't moved in that amount of time. Some yeasts like ringwood are very good at settling out and can take some time to attenuate fully. In such a case the advice from stux is good - a bit of a swirl then a few more days would finish it off.

Hi Lars, Thanks for you reply, I have done some investigation on the BrewAdelaide forum and one of the guys there showed me a pic of his voltage controller. I did some searching and I am buying this from EvilBay. All I need to do is fit it in a box (with the heat sink on the outside! ) wire it in t...

G'day Onepot The concealed element is easy to clean as ianh says but I found that during the boil I was getting a build up of charred wort on the area that the element touches. Here is a picture taken after my first batch. Now I scrape the bottom with a long scraper several times during the boil so ...

Weyermann choc wheat malt is 800-1200 EBC according to their website. 100g of that is going to make it fairly dark. Yes it is too much if you were really going for an APA. In fact if I was making an APA I would leave it out and stick with the rest of your grain bill. It looks the goods. No it certai...

Hmmm. Seems temp effects the Gravity reading far more than I expected (or the wort was a lot warmer than I thought). I took some of the wort out of the boiler after I topped up the water to 27l. I let it cool till it was luke-warm to warm and measured the gravity. It read 1.034. I then left the sam...

I bought a hard copy of this book after reading quite a bit of it online. I think it is a great book but yes, it does go well past what a beginner needs to know. I got this after quite a few years of kits and bits brewing, so I already knew some of the basics, and I was moving on to BIAB. It was the...

Hi Squared This is the same as US-05, right? I have exactly the same thing with this yeast. It just won't sink to the bottom and the beer is a bit hazy if I don't use a clearing agent. I am currently using Wyeast 1275 for the first time and I am seeing the same thing. The krausen is very thick and g...

Dick: At the end of the boil it was around 21l. How do I use this to calculate efficiency and how does that effect OG? In terms of measuring the OG, I just removed some of the wort into my measuring cylinder when it was still pretty hot and left it to cool to room temp, then measured the gravity. H...

Well done Stefan. I think that you have nailed it. You only had a small problem with the AA content of the hops but that won't matter too much. It sounds like you have a nice APA underway. What volume did you have at the end of the boil? You need this to work out your efficiency so as to get ...

G'day Wooderson PP beat me to it but yeah, have a read of that post. You probably want to start with 19-20 litres of strike water and with that kind of liquor to grain ratio you want the strike temperature to be 3-4 degrees higher than the mash temperature. Don't make it too hard for yourself the fi...

Ok. So still super keen but have been thinking about things a bit. In all likelihood I will be heading to Vancouver in about 3 months to study/work for the next 2 years so am a little reluctant to invest too much money at this point. I can either buy a second hand urn and sell it or I can simply hi...

I think I completely stuffed a post of mine up here on BBI. Can you read this post of mine ? There I said the melting point of polyester was 400 C but when we are talking material, I think I have got this quite wrong. I'd like to edit that post but want some more info from you first. (Think I had t...

What you have suggested with the sieves could work. Another idea could be to get a strip of thin metal and bend it so there is an angle in the middle and this is put over the probe, vertically, so a bag can go up without getting caught as it slides along this pieces of metal but the wort can get to ...
