1. Fermenting in the Kettle

  Hi, I know this was discussed in this post
  
  But that was 4 years ago, I was wondering if anyone had looked into it since then.
  
  I was brewing a Hobgoblin clone (one of my favourite recipes) this weekend and my fermenter started to leak, so I transferred the wort back into the kettle and added yeast.
  
  All seems to be going well.
  
  I was just wonder given the recent rise in 'All in ones' like the Grainfather & Robo brew, if anyone was doing it on a regular basis?

2. Dried Yeast Starters ?

  Why can't Dried yeast be used to make a Starter?
  
  I have read lots and lots of posts on multiple sites stating that you cannot use a Dried Yeast to make a Starter
  
  Does anyone know why?
  
  Yeast is hard to come by where I live and it would be good if I could split a packet, create a Starter and save the rest for another batch.
  
  Why would this not work?
  
  If you can create a Starter from a single cel and via Slants and Setups create a Starter, why not from part of a Dried Yeast pack containing...

  I have never read that you ' can't ' use dry yeast in a starter. I think the general consensus is just that it is unnecessary, since a dry yeast pack has more than enough cells to ferment the standard 5 or 6 gallon batch, where as with liquid yeast the count is lower, and more variable.

  Not sure if I should have posted this here or in the a Recipes section.
  
  I am trying to find (or put together) a really good beer recipe that allow a strong honey flavour to shine though.
  
  Why?
  
  Because I want to enter it into our local beekeeping honey product competition. All the entries seem to be Polishes, Upside down cakes or energy bars, and I though a beer might go down well.
  
  I normally drink dark malty ales, but am concerned that the heavy malts would mask the honey.

  Hi All,
  
  I will be trying to brew a batch of very light summer ale for the wife (and friends) in a few months. And I am starting to do some research as to possible recipes?
  
  She only like lagers. I do not have the equipment to brew / ferment a true lager so I am looking for a very light summer ale that will be close.
  
  The best I have come up with is a SMASH based on a very light malt and a fairly flavourless hop.

  Hi chaps,
  
  Am now getting close to double figures on my brew days, and am starting to think I have my brew day, sorted, not the brews just the order I should be doing things :), and would like to start to polish my method.
  
  I normally don't dunk, just lift out the bag, squeeze and go straight to boil.
  
  I have read else where it can create better beer if you 'hold back' a little of the strike water for a dunk.
  
  Your thoughts and advice, gratefully received.

  Great info. Thanks! However, there's a huge section on the board where Ralph demonstrates maxiBIAB and he dunks. It's a bit confusing because it's presented as a how to for maxiBIAB but it seems it's not best way to do it. Am I missing something? As Mad-Scientist says above, it is not ideal.

6. Switch from US gals to UK Gals?

  As far as I can see when I enter an amount is litres it is automatically converted to Gals, so I can see it in both units. This is great and extremely useful.
  
  However, it appears to be US gals, is there a way to set it to convert to UK gals?
  
  A check box somewhere I have missed?
  
  Nearly all of the auto claculations have an adjustment field but I cannot find one to change this setting.

  Thanks PP, I thought it might have been the compatibility issue, I know you (and the team) have put literally thousands of hours into BIABacus.
  
  At my level, I use it more as a teaching tool than a recipe database, and know it has much much more to teach me :)

  I have only recently started AG and have just brewed my first BIAB. I tried to use the BIABacus sheet, mostly as a way to learn to be honest.
  
  I think I have filled it out correctly, I say think, because all of the data is correct, I might not have filled the form out right.

  Just to let you know the beer was great, soft and mild in the mouth with a strong after taste of dark chocolate, even the wife liked it.
  
  I am all set on the BIABacus at the mo, I will leave it here and when the heat wave is over will brew a new batch with it and my new understanding. I might even brew the same beer, just up the quantity to 4 Gals

  PistolPatch - Thanks for your input! So, I'm not only limited by the volume that will fit in my pot, but also my ability to bring that amount to a boil on the stove? I have done 7.5 gal all grain boils in this pot on my old stove, but it did take almost an hour to bring it up to a boil.   Still very new to BIAB, and still dialing in my system. I have been over shooting my target pre boil volume and then boiling down to my final volume.
  
  Is this good or bad practice?
  
  I normally make heavy chewy dark beers so if the only issue (if there is one) is potential caremalisation, that will be fine.mi would like to know though, as I am going to attempt a Blonde some time this year.

  Boiling down to final volume can be a problem especially with beers that are hop-driven. A better policy is to use less water and top up a little at the end of the brew. This makes things easy.
  
  Another problem with boiling down is that you never really get a good handle on what is going on. If you are spending more time boiling down, how will you get to know your average evaporation rate for example?
