   1. Boil duration - 60 or 90mins?

      Hi all,
      
      Just a quick question on boil times.
      Some brewers boil for 90min, others for 60min.
      
      What's the reason for a 90min boil?
      Is it just to creat a more concentrated wort (ie. less grain required to get desired OG)??
      Or is there something more techincal that I'm missing...which is usually the case :lol:.

      The longer boil drives off most of the DMS precursor's. Yep, which are higher in concentration for lighter kilned malts ESPECIALLY pilsner malt. Its recommended you do a 90min boil anytime you use pilsner malt.
      
      And its also good for the other reasons discussed.

      Hi all,
      
      After 6 or 7 BIAB brews, I lashed out and brought a shiny new 40L Birko urn.
      Cranked it up for the first time for an APA last weekend...target OG 1.054.
      
      Everything went well and after a 90min mash(66c + 70c mashout), I hit pre-boil gravity of 1.050.
      At this stage I thought I was bang on to hit mid 50s post boil, so started drinking :whistle:.
      
      After a 90min boil, I lost about 4L to evapouration.
      Took another sample, put it aside to cool and transfered to my 20L cube.
      As I was filling...

      Was looking for some advice for improvements to the following brew...
      
      Maxi-BIAB APA
      
      Grain Bill (5900g)
      4800g (76%) Simpsons Ale - Maris Otter
      1000g (17%) JWM Light Munich
      300g (5%) Weyermann Carahell
      100g (2%) JWM Malted Wheat
      
      Mash in at 65C for 90 mins.
      2 x dunk sparge (progressively added to the boil).
      90min boil.
      
      Hop Schedule
      20g Chinook 60min
      20g Cascade 10min
      20g Citra (hop tea into fermenter with dilution water)
      10g Citra (dry hop after primary ferm...

   4. Dry hop in a corny keg??

      Hi all, I think I may have been misled by my LHBS and am in serious need of some help from people that actually know what they are doing....you guys!!
      My APA had just finished fermenting and I was about to rack it with some nice Cascade hops.
      Then I got to thinking if I could just transfer it to my corny keg and put the hopsock in with it.
      According to my LHBS, this would be no problem at all, but then when went to carb it up and took the first pour, I had tiny hop particles in my beer. Tastes...

      New to the forum, but not to dry hopping in a keg. I use the dental floss method described by Thughes with a fine mesh nylon bag, but I also add a sure screen to make sure that my dip tube does not clog. These fit well over a dip tube on a keg and look like the bazooka tubes that some people use in mash tuns and boil kettles. Cheap and works for me. You could probably go even cheaper and use the stainless water supply hose as well.

   5. Maxi-BIAB recipe help

      Hi all,
      
      After doing a couple of mini-BIABs I want to have a crack at a maxi-BIAB to get me up around 20L brew length.
      10L wort seem like a lot of work for not much drinking :drink: !!
      
      NRB's All Amarillo APA from here...
      
      I've plugged all the numbers into Stux's Maxi-BIAB Calculator Jun29.
      And come out with this...
      
      OVERVIEW
      
      Style: American Pale Ale
      Name: NRB's All Amarillo American Pale Ale...ish
      Yeast: Wyeast American Pale Ale 1056
      Fermentation Temperature: 18 C
      Original Gravity: 1.058...

      You calculated my evap rate spot on - 3.6L/hour is what I've been getting.

   6. APA Recipe Advice

      Hey all,
      
      I'm gearing up to start my 2nd BIAB attempt in the next week or so and would love some advice on the recipe.
      And also volumes and stuff, as my 1st attempt was a bit off :interesting:.
      
      Going for an APA based on the one Rigger has posted on the G&G site.
      Will heat water to around 70c to keep the mash at around 65% for the 90min.
      Hoping to end up with around 10L.
      
      Volumes from The Calculator as follows.
      Brew Length 10.00 lts
      Fermenter Trub* 0.80 lts
      Volume into Fermenter 10.80 lts...

      All sounds as though it's in hand though you could keep the cube out fo the fridge if you wanted and just add cooled boiled water (even tap water rarely will cause a problem) at pitching time.
      
      Haven't had any more fights with Excel since then. Yay!

   7. Low pre-boil gravity mini-BIAB

      Hey all,
      
      So tonight I took the plunge and put my first every all grain BIAB on.
      It's a mini BIAB on the stove in my appartment.
      
      Grain Bill...
      2100g Pale Ale
      420g Munich 1
      210g CaraAmber
      
      Starting volume was 18L hoping to end up with a 10L wort.
      After pulling the bag, I think there is probably about 14L left in the pot.
      
      Kept the mash at around 65% for 90mins.
      After cooling the initial sample to 20c, my gravity reading is 1.034 :think: .
      Was aiming to get up around 1.040 as this is an APA....

      I learn something here pretty much every day and I've been brewing for a while. Nearly every question and answer I see on BIABrewer.info is well thought out or full of enthusiasm which is extraordinary on a brewing forum :thumbs:.
      
      On the rare occasion that any advice is wrong, it seems to get corrected within a few posts in a nice manner. (I love this because there are so many mistakes that can be made when posting advice, some as simple as not reading the original...
