   1. Help adjusting BiaBacus to assist low EAW - Efficiency of Ambient Wort

      Hi to all
      
      after a debacle with my LHBS not milling my grain well I got my own mill recently and I mill quite fine. My first two batches using this mill has led to both batches (targets 1046 and 1048) being 6-7 gravity points short each.
      
      My Biabacus for both is reporting the EAW - Efficiency of Ambient Wort of each to be 66%
      
      I'm not wanting to change more than one variable at a time so my inclination is to leave the mill gap setting as is and adjust the Biabacus for my next brew to make up...

   2. Draft posts are stuck in limbo

      I wrote a draft post but when I try to access it to update/ post all I can do is 'reset or save'
      
      there doesn't look to be a way to turn a draft into a post?

      As a quick fix, I'm hoping you can select/copy your draft and then paste it into a new post? Please let me know if that works.
      
      As for a permanent fix, after spending about a billion dollars and the same amount of hours on the site...

      Hi to all
      
      I've been trying to get to the bottom of the low integrity recipes on byo.com which has loads of impressive clone recipes I'd like to brew.
      
      I wanted to let the forum know my findings and see if anyone has any suggestions or revisions.
      
      So I want to brew these Fullers recipes here
      
      Scouring this and other forums, and the BYO site, the most credible evidence I can find to get close to determining water volumes is the answer from Jamil Zainasheff to Bundy in post #19 of this thread...

   4. Writing guides

      In wonder if there's anywhere in the community you can write a guide e.g. in PDF and post it where other members may find it useful?
      
      I've written a fairly substantial guide about 'getting started in home brewing' a 12 x page PDF and I think it would help others make a start, but I dunno how to get it out there for newbies to see it
      
      I fear if I drop an article in say the beginners forum it'll get rapidly eclipsed and lost.... thoughts would be appreciated

      Great post Nick - intelligent, realistic thoughts there, not negativity or pessimism. It's a good thing we like to take on the impossible :)
      
      As for the diagram, I have quite a few more that investigate all the different relationships. Doing that sometimes help me to find some missing links. Nice of you to comment on it :salute:

   5. Rolling with the punches on a double batch

      So on my second double batch day I'd attempted I was a bit disorganised and short of sleep after recovering from illness.
      
      Here are all the .. ahem.. challenges I confronted.
      
      1 On the night before brew morning I was filling my kettles and was eyeing the sealed bags of grain from the LHBS. One should have been bigger than the other as one batch was for 26L and the other only 13L yet they looked bloody similar. I checked my Biabacus files vs the LHBS receipt and to my horror found I'd ordered...

      I thought I'd share my story of mashing fails that I thought for a month or more was actually stuck ferments. It wasn't, I've learned a valuable lesson, and I'd like to share it.
      
      Long story short; by not correctly controlling my mash temp I was leaving too many unfermentable sugars it would seem.
      
      I'm a new brewer starting in August '15 and here's what I encountered recently:
      
      Batch #009 - German Pils (Brewing Classic Styles): my OG 1044, target FG: 1009, my FG: 1019

   7. Multiple Biabacus files to create your shopping list?

      I have a question about querying/ looking up data across a lot of Biabacus files and wonder if someone has already solved this challenge and can tell me how.
      
      I have been loading my to-brew recipes into individual Biabacus files and setting them aside for future use. It'd be nice to be able to query all of these files to determine what ingredients I'll need to brew them all. For example if I have six recipes loaded into six different Biabacus files and I want to know how much Cascade...

      ...I might refer the question to my finance types at work under the guise of real work haha.
      I'd imagine since it's a known cell location in each workbook it'll be possible; but perhaps not with freeware
      Will update if I crack the case Good stuff ;).
      
      The key will be not using any macros so it would be fantastic if they can come up with a solution.
      
      I'm tempted, in some ways, to put the final release of the BIABacus out as a LibreOffice file :scratch:. The advantage of doing that would be it...

   8. Method and timing of adjustments for FVM

      I'm having a bit of trouble finding explicit instructions on when and how to add your water adjustments. Even 'How to brew' and the Bru'n water knowledge don't spell this out.
      
      From watching videos and random snippets I've read i think the following is the right approach but I'd appreciate confirmation or a steer in the right direction from any that know for sure.
      
      1 add your Camden tablet to kettle
      2 fill kettle to SWN level and add your acid addition e.g. Phosphoric
      3 commence heating...

      Inconceivable, one other Thing.
      
      The Campden tabs need 20-30 minutes to remove Chlorine, Faster if Crushed, Finely.
      
      Add any other salts/minerals as it starts heating to Dough in temperature, it Take Time to Disolve!!
      
      As the Grains heat thru 121F to 130F the PH of the Mash will drop 1.0 ph to 1.5 ph (in step mashing, it is Acid Rest).
      
      So check the Ph of the mash, a few minutes after Dough in, before adjusting it to 5.5ph.
      
      This, and brewing salts such as gypsum are actually more soluble...

   9. First time BiaB- two mini batches in one day

      Below I'll paste my brew notes for each batch I did today; my first day of ever doing BiaB. My approach was to do two small (MiniBiab) batches to get used to it and try before I buy the recipes; i.e. only do 4L (1 gallon) batches so if they taste crap I don't have to throw out as much.
      
      It all took longer than expected, my oven and electric stove top definitely add to the duration and stress of a brew day.
      
      All in all a good day; I think I'll have one decent beer and most likely...

      Wow Inconceivable, that is very ambitious for a first brew day, good on you. Very detailed brew logs too, this will serve you well as you progress, especially with such small batch sizes, and a couple laughs to boot. Sounds like everything went extraordinarily well for your first time around. I look forward to hearing how these turn out!
      
      Everything pretty much went badly from here on, but it's all a learning experience. At least my 'dud' batches were small.

   10. First Foray into BIAB- two minis this weekend- pls check?

       I'm just starting out in home brewing and having watched many videos, read a great deal here, and watched my mate BIAB last weekend I'm ready to do my first 4L (VIF) small batches.
       
       If anyone would mind checking my attached Biabacus files to see if I've badly screwed them up that'd be greatly appreciated before I buy the grain bill?
       
       I've got a lot of ideas and enthusiasm so my plan is to get two batches into 15L fermenters this weekend, then when my primary is bottled in about 10...

       Learned many things including that two brews in a day is hard and takes up a lot of time, and ensuring your fermenter tap is turned off is wise....

   11. VIF much higher than expected- please help?

       today I did my first ever BiaB a mini stout. I screwed up the grain bill and left 9% of the grains out which probably accounts for 13 x missing points of OG
       
       What really troubled me though is I ended up with 1.8L of VIF more than my Biabacus called for. Per attached I started my mash with 11.74L (SWN). Didn't note VAW along the way but after chilling my ruler showed just under 8L and that's what ended up in fermeneter despite me configuring Biabacus to give me 6L

       Update for the record. My second BiaB of the day I reduced the SWN with some back of the envelope voodoo maths and then was sweating on the VFO target and nursing along a more vigorous boil to hit it. I ended up coming in a whisker under the VFO target (hooray).
       Then hilariously I didn't realise the tap on my new fermenter was open and lost 200ml+ of my 4L batch whilst aerating by pouring between kettle and fermenter after the chill (whoops).
