      I am using a FastFerment Conical fermenter and have begun to use a technique that I am actually unsure of the pro vs con regarding it. Hoping to get some very experienced folks to school me.
      
      I use no-chill cubes so I do not go straight from the boil kettle to the fermenter. The wort may sit in the cube for several days waiting for the previous beer to be transferred from the conical to the keg.       Taking early steps to manage trub would be better, as mentioned by others with bag and sock porosity etc. I started with poor quality bags and eventually made up a few fine mesh Swiss voile bags (thank you beachbum/bribie for the simple circle design) the difference in trub was massive. Added whirlpooling at the end of boiling and slow transfer to the cube, again big improvement.       I have been trying to adapt an Irish Red Ale to BIAB and I am hoping someone can take a look at my recipe to see if I am on the right track. I made some adjustments to attempt to place all the characteristics of an IRA approximately in the middle (average) for the style.
      
      Please let me know if this is a beer you would brew. This is only my second BIAB....don't want to screw it up.

      Yes, I did. Brewed it with an Irish friend of mine and both he and I were very pleased with it. Drank it all at his graduation party a couple years ago. I haven't had the opportunity to try it again, but it will be on the top of my list...

      Awhile ago PistolPatch recommended that I begin posting our (my wife and I) adventures while we travel the States in our RV.    4. CONVERTING BEERSMITH RECIPE TO BIABACUS

      I am preparing my next BIAB brew (only my 4th BIAB). This is a recipe I have previously brewed in my 3-tier HERMS (Heat Exchanged Recirculating Mash System) several times with success. I have also brewed it one time using BIAB with success as well. Now that I am starting to become more used to using the BIABacus, I am also coming up with more questions.
      
      I am attaching the original Beersmith recipe (the last batch I brewed with my HERMS) and the BIABacus file I intend to use for my next batch....

      Just a fast one on this as I haven't read the thread just the title. Do an advanced search on any posts with, BeerSmith in the title. You will find at least a few very detailed threads where this question is already answered in minute detail and you will also see how difficult it is to translate a recipe from a one speed vehicle to a five speed automatic that can be clicked into manual. I'll leave it to you guys to guess which program is the versatile one.

      OK...Although I have been brewing for MANY years, this is only my third BIAB, and my first at my 5th Wheel RV. As some of you already know, I have retired and my wife and I full-time it in our RV. I used to use a 3-tier brewing system, but downgraded (in size....) to a BIAB system due to the space constraints.       I think I used to do that (cover kettle) years ago. Funny how, for some unknown reason you stop doing something a specific way and it never occurs to you to go back to that routine. (talking about ME of course). It IS a good idea to cover the wort and I am going to start doing it again. Thanks for the tip!
      
      In the future I intend to get some scenic pictures as well. There isn't much at the place I am presently, so I concentrated on the beer.... Expect better...

   6. My first BIAB

      A picture of my first BIAB. Dr Smurto's Golden Ale. Although I have a good turkey fryer base, I wanted to try my Volcano Grill. It is only 15K BTU, but on the plus side, a breeze doesn't affect the flame nearly as much...no shield needed. Took about 50 minutes to take the mash water from 55 to 158F. And then another 20 minutes to get it to boil after the mash. All-in-all, a good first BIAB.

      Just finished my first BIAB. While I was waiting for it to warm up a bit outside, I put two 16L pots on the stove on low and heated 5G/20L of water to about 175°F. When I was ready to start brewing, I just dumped the water into my kettle and added two more gallons to get me to my target volume / temperature.
      
      Saved quite a bit of propane and time.
