Just wanted to update you guys on my brew day debacle; I racked it over to the secondary about a week ago and added my peppers a couple of days ago, to add the fire to my pumpkin ale, I tasted it last night and the beer gods have been looking over me. It tastes pretty good at this point but not near...
The ambient temp dropped 20 degrees, but I struggled to maintain mash temp but OG was close enough that I am not concerned about that. It is all the nastys on the vial that scare me. It's bubbling away so only time will tell.
The day started out fine, but the weatherman's forecast was off and incomes a storm during the mash; Temperature dropped about 20 degrees and it rained pretty hard. We got everything moved to relative safety, but not completely. When I was opening the cap on the yeast it fizzed like a shook up pop b...
Pistol, Point taken with regards to the warning of mixing these two chemicals, it is very dangerous if not done correctly, however, since I have been following this topic I felt the warnings were clear. With regards to the podcast; If I recall correctly the gentleman was the founder of 5-Star with a...
Since I started this thread I have been using the bleach/vinegar solution with no problems. two batches done with the 3rd conditioning in the bottles right now. I believe I found my alternative to starsan. Thanks again to everybody who posted.
I never considered "dry hopping" the spices. This is my first attempt at designing, a somewhat, original recipe and I have never dry hopped anything. I assume you would use a muslin bag for the spices?

I am trying to come up with a pumpkin ale that has a nice spicy/hot finish, but one that does not over power and maintains the integrity/taste of a conventional pumpkin. Any suggestions of what kind of peppers to use, how much and when to introduce; Mash, boil, primary, secondary etc. Any help would...
Many thanks to all those who have posted; Eoin, this maybe a stupid question; Is there a difference between "regular" household bleach, say Clorox in the US versus "thin" bleach that you mentioned?
Crusader: How are you using your Starsan?? I'm a recent convert and have barely put a dent in bottle yet! I make up a 2.5 gal batch with ever batch; I make it in my carboy the morning of each brew day, let it sit for a half hour or so then siphon it into a bucket where I fill my auto siphon and let...
First, Let me start by saying I am a tight wad; With that said, I recently discovered two things 1) Avery inexpensive alternative for Iodophor in the form of teat dip at a local farm store. 2) Starsan; I like this product over Iodophor because I don't care for the iodine stains although given the co...
I brewed an AG kit saturday using the BIAB method and everything wen great until my thermometer broke with 10 minutes left in the mash http://www.biabrewer.info/posting.php?mode=post&f=5# Admittedly I panicked a bit, but not having lost any temp in 50 minutes I let sit for 10 more to finish the mash...

I have wanted to make the jump to AG, but I must admit I like the simplicity of extract brewing, but like most the all...
