Masher versus Paddle

Post #7 made 15 years ago
Barley Belly has some more great pics of his rig in this thread. When I first started reading that thread and read the words, "I also lashed out on a staino mash paddle..." I thought, "Oh no! :nup: " because I assumed he had bought something along the lines of what you'll see if you google image, 'mash paddle.'

I then saw his pic and went, "Wow, that is excellent! :champ: "

One thing that I always found very strange when I started all-grain brewing (in the traditional method), was the mash paddles that traditional home-brewers used, such as you'll see in the pictures in the link above. All I had available on my first AG (a traditional one) was my, "paint-stirrer/large potato masher," and I was a bit worried because it was nothing like the other mash paddles I had seen. It worked beautifully - twenty times better than other paddles, maybe more, because the masher does actually work whereas many normal paddles really don't. The masher is elegant whilst the paddle, at best, is clumsy.

On other forums, I asked or even started threads on why traditional paddles would work better or be easier to use than mashers. This had the surprising effect of accelerating that topic right out of the Active Topics page . No one has ever answered that question for me. I'd love to find out the history of the traditional mash paddle as I expect its original use was for very large open mash tuns with places hard to reach. It certainly has never made any sense to me for any type of all-grain home brewing.

It's probably about time we BIABrewers started talking about our, "mashers," rather than our, "paddles."

Whatever happens, I reckon Barley Belly has the best, most elegant, masher I have seen to date .

Good on you Belly ;).
PP

P.S. I just had a closer look at those Google images. I can't see one showing a professional brewer using a, 'paddle.'

So my mash masher isn't elegant hey PP
Sorry BB for the banter, if I had of found a mashed like that I would of bought it but all I could find were short plastic, and cheap steel ones.
Top piece of kit you have there.

Thanks guys

I'm giving it a run today
10 mins left of 60min 66deg mash
Heat back on then stir with my new masher till I get to 76deg mash out temp, rest for 10 min, then lift the bag

Oh, and did I say I am breaking my BIAB cherry with this brew as well.

Wiz, yours used to be the best but now .

Actually, it's quite impossible to tell from pics which style, holes versus wire, would work better. For example, your pic looks as though it has less surface area than Belly's but this could well be an optical illusion. You two should send each other a paddle so you can do a side by side

Got me one :)

My New Mash Weapon, Ala Barley Belly
mash weapon small.jpg
I found this at The Hospitality Depot, Auburn, It's like the Bunnings of Catering

It was about 48$, its 650mm long I think, and I had great difficulty fitting it into the photo!

Was a fun, but expensive outing... take your wife... I did!

And it was 45C in the shade!

That's exactly what I use :) A large potato masher I bought at a restaurant supply shop.

It works great for busting lumps and general stirring.
A rapid up-and down motion really gets the grain off the bottom.
