zero kettle trub & buffer?

Post #1 made 13 years ago
I was reading this thread about trub, and thought i would document a method i have recently tried.
I would like to point out that i am not saying this is a good or bad method, or that it is better than others. It came about because i bought a hop strainer that can sit in the boil (instead of a BIAB bag, which is just as good i might add).

I wanted to try zero minute hop additions, but this pot is too small for all the hops on the schedule and would overflow into the kettle, so i thought what can i do? Well as i already drain hot wort into a cube, i could try something similar to hopbacks/randalls etc. and just drain the hot wort through this "hoptainer" into the cube. So i placed my funnel in the cube placed a BIAB bag over the funnel (to catch any escaping hops) and placed the hoptainer in the bag.
02 zero min hops.jpg
Because i always Irish moss 15 mins prior here is where i would normally stop the flow.
03 regular trub.jpg
However, i thought at the time (similar to Bobbrews method) just chuck it all in, who cares? and here is my kettle trub now.
04 filter trub.jpg
and how it looks at the filter end, unfortunately on this brew the flow was too great and it overflowed. On other brews i have managed to contain the majority of the trub in the hoptainer.

and what goes into the bin, not the cube

So with this method i think you could achieve a half way house between stopping the flow before trub starts, and dumping the whole lot in. So what does it achieve? probably not that much, i do end up with more beer from the same recipe, and i have to wash an extra item (funnel). I guess it may appeal to those who dislike trub & buffer losses, but also dislike trub in the fermenter. I also, dont think it will remove all trub, just the majority. YMMV

The 1+ for filtering the trub, instead of dumping it all is, Clean yeast, if you collect and reuse it.

Mally,

Good job! Keep brewing, documenting, and verifying your ascension to "Brewing Nirvana" We need to keep overthrowing accepted practices (and or) confirming accepted traditions. The subject of trub and weather it is a asset or detriment to fermentation is question to be answered!
tap 1 Raspberry wine
tap 2 Bourbon Barrel Porter
tap 3 Czech Pilsner
tap 4 Triple IPA 11% ABV

Pipeline: Mulled Cider 10% ABV

Good on you mally :peace:. I never use whole hops so don't know anything about them trub-wise. Do you need the funnel and the bag or could you just use the bag? I'm guessing if you only use the bag it clogs up or something.

Only possible issue I am seeing is the increased exposure to oxygen during the transfer. Not sure if that's a drama or not?

Btw, something I didn't realise until about a year ago thanks to someone here is that you should add the whirfloc at five minutes not fifteen. After hearing that I found a scientific paper on it and sure enough, five minutes is the go. It's affect decreases considerably from memory if added earlier. That gave me a surprise!!!

Thanks for the tip about whirlfloc PP, i will give that a try next time.

The only reason i use the funnel is because it has its own filter (removable round disc), and this is great for sitting the hoptainer on.
Granted, it does splash more as the funnel doesnt reach the base of the cube, but i havent noticed any problems so far.

My previous brew using this method was a Guiness clone, using the calculator to get 23L into packaging and i actually got 26L (from 35L water). I am guessing the majority of this was from elsewhere (evaporation, inaccuracies etc.) but i am not complaining!

Cool!

And, don't for a minute doubt the savings you are making. The Calculator's default for kettle trub and buffer is set on the high side for an average-hopped brew. It assumes no hop or trub management methods are used. Any sort of method that increases the clear wort you get from the kettle reduces the buffer (waste) so your savings are real and good.
