Re: is FG Correct

I just put a plastic bag loosely over the lot but I've wanted something a bit more elegant...
Next time I might cut the finger off a disposable glove. Only issue with that would be that it might blow off but a pin prick in it would fix that though :drink:

Welcome aboard Siman :salute:

Always great to see a new member from my birth town and great to see you found the site. The site has a lot of great info but the info is quite buried atm so just ask any questions you have and someone is sure to save you from digging.

Enjoy the career break :)

Re: same beer, 15 flavours, differnt pull.

Sounds more like a very good marketing strategy than a reality :P (For example, if you are only allowed 2 beers, no one is going to be able to prove that you could have had 15 "different" ones from the same tap.) However, there is one germ of truth in there... The article says, "once a glass has bee...

No, I'll never reproduce that one. I can't even remember if it was the APA or IPA that had it. I think it actually increased over time too! Very poor record-keeping by me :P

Good on you abi and congrats on your maiden voyage :champ: I think you will have a good beer, it will just be a bit lower in alcohol than you expected (say 3.9% versus 4.5%). This is no problem at all. Here's a few general notes for you... Measuring - A stainless steel ruler makes measuring wort vol...

I'll have to honest with you, every time I see o minutes I put the hops in at 20 minutes and at flame out I remove the hop sock... Re: is FG Correct

That should be fine Phillip however your plan to take a second reading is sensible (I'll give you another tip on this at the end of this post) because: 1. Hydrometers can be inaccurate (as can refractometers) 2. Samples can sometimes not reflect the gravity of the fermenter 3. Final gravity estimate...

Re: Disaster

Philip and anyone who is re-using yeast, two things...

1. Always smell the yeast before you pitch it.
2. Always taste it before you pitch it.

If there is something wrong, in my experience, one or both of those tests will reveal it.

Diacetyl as a Flavour rather than a Fault

[For the last three months, I've been busier than a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs so please forgive my recent lack of contribution here.] Diacetyl, that butterscotchy/toffee flavour. It's pretty much always mentioned as a fault (correct me please if I'm incorrect on that) however,...

Nice job WIndrider :salute: Very short on time atm* so... Cocoa nibs is fine there. Not too sure of the fermentability of them but the amount is so minute in comparison to the overall bill, it's totally okay in Secion F. Excellent fix on the EBC for lactose. Nice job. Good stuff Richard :peace:

That's a long time without power. And then, the damage has to be repaired which you never hear much about as "news" always focuses on the drama of the day.

I hope all gets back to normal for you and your community as fast as possible.

Re: Adding extra yeast after lagering?

Hi Clackers, Sounds like a great summer :peace: Priming I would not use extra yeast for priming. At time of writing, anyone who says they know exactly how to prime any style of bottled beer is doing way better than we are and, here, we have explored the issue. I know local craft breweries here (big ...

You are right on the typo - should have been Section D. (I'll edit that above if I remember!) Hi Nick, Just for clarification for other readers... Use 21.82 L at the top of Section C D for VAW when doing BCS recipes. Edited as per PP 2 posts down However, that is not Nick's question. How'd we miss you shetc? :o Sorry Steve! I'm not sure what you mean by MS's technique? When you say the grain bill balances at 17.0L, that doesn't necessarily mean you have the original recipe interpreted correctly; in fact, it's not sounding quite right to me. I heard rumours that the new site might run a competition for best pics. I think you are going to be serious competition for everyone Marko :o

If you post your BIABacus file up here, we can have a quick squiz to make sure nothing obvious has been missed.

And, another great read. Thank you
