mashout at 80c

just a quick question regarding mashout..... After a 90 min full volume mash at 66c I always do a 15 min mashout at 78c (172f) (after reading somewhere it improves efficiency,) that is except for this morning, for some brain-faded reason while doing an APA I have inadvertently done my 15 min mashout...

[MOD EDIT: corrected website address] A bit late replying but I would also like to wish you Pat, and all other members at BIABrewer.info the best for 2016. BIABrewer.info has been a source of great knowledge to me since starting BIAB brewing and is in a big way responsible for me now producing cons...

Yes, I've thought about a grain mill. Any recommendations on a reasonably priced one that will do the job (that I can get in here in Victoria/Melbourne?).
I got mine off ebay, I'm not sure who the supplier was but I think it cost me about 70 bucks, but back then roller mills were a lot more...

[quote="you don't have to spend a lot of money on a mill, this one does just fine and you should be able to find one at a local brew shop for a very reasonable price: http://www.amazon.com/Weston-Cereal-and-Multi-Grain-Mill/dp/B000T3ML4G/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1447678273&sr=8-6&keywords=corona+mill ...

bre3wing it is the easiest bit....drinking that much is what takes time! :drink:
@Alanem, I'm with Todd. Keep it simple. Use 2 vials, don't secondary and pitch onto yeast cake. There's no reason that this won't make excellent beer. If you're relatively new to this don't overcomplicate it Mate, you and Todd have both won me over with simplicity, I think using LY for...

If your bag is showing a bit of wear and tear replace it with a new one and save the worry of it splitting..... if you keep your equipment in good nick it will save a bloody lot of misfortune and despair at a time when you don't need it too.

Thanks guys I appreciate the input from you all and thanks for taking the time. OK so by looking at the answers given I would be best to use 2 vials, racking to a clean fermentor and collecting the yeast and re-pitching. I am not keen on secondary's as I believe it creates that extra risk of infecti...

WLP001 direct

At the moment I am in the process of using a liquid yeast for the first time, more out of curiosity than anything else. I intend to use White Labs WLP001 California Ale Yeast in a DrSmurto Golden Ale. I'm not really fussed about splitting or making starters etc as I haven't the equipment, (eg: mason...

Alanem, I'm confused. Section K Estimated Volumes notes evaporation as 8.07 ltrs and kettle to fermentor loss as 4.1 litrs. What is the difference? Sorry Rob....Firstly I had overlooked the fact that this being your first brew you would have had no previous brewing records to see what your average ...

Hi Rob, I'm no guru (a long way from it) but just looking at your BIABacus I note you haven't made allowance for evaporation in sec. X and you are getting a default evap of 4.1 approx (10%) on 24ltrs in a 60ltr pot which going by my brews seems a very small evap rate. I set my evap rate to 6 ltrs an...

I am intrigued with the use of an stc-1000 thermostat for your mash temps. Do you have a special probe fitted for it to sit in the mash water or do you have a thermowell sort of setup ? I Have 4 thermometers with all different readings and never thought of using my STC-1000 for that purpose. Hmmmm :...

I was having some seriously bad tastes going through my brews a while back and tried everything to fix the problem, anyway as a last resort I totally dismantled the ball valve and tap on my kettle to find that the nylon/plastic washer inside the valve was all battered and screwed up and crap had bui...

Thanks PP all is good, I have bottled it and will just wait and see what happens, maybe I'll do another JSGA brew with a high ABV and then shandy the 2 brews when drinking time comes around
cheers

Thanks guys.... Lumpy I no chill so when the cube is about 22c I tip it from a fair height into the FV so it gets a fair aerating there..... The grain went in @ 69c for 90 mins and I lost about 4c over that time... I will try with the gentle rocking method and see what happens Thanks for your help m...

Gravity probs

Hi, I have brewed up a Dr Smurto Golden Ale and I'm having troubles with my gravity readings, it seems just all up the creek... My OG was two points down on the expected 1.044 and my FG after 16 days is 4 points up on my expected 1.013.......... My Brix readings 3 days after pitching (Tues 9 Dec) wa...

If your consistently getting, or averaging a KFL of 3.8 litres then just go to section X in BIABacus and adjust your KFL there.
Personally I wouldn't stuff about with filtering through a hop sock, just creating extra work in my book.

Pat, I realise your paid work comes before anything else and that BIABacus is a special project on the side and I greatly appreciate the work and hours that you put into the project. After reading your post and others on the subject I now fully comprehend the reasons and understand the situation muc...

I think the point is that people have to join/sign up, read the site rules, make an introductory forum post and then get approved by admin before gaining access the BIABacus. That's what I did and found it all quite straight-forward. Reading the site rules etc actually leads you to where the file i...
Alanem, check http://www.biabrewer.info/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=1869 thats just it Josh, I can flip around in the site and find it, but what I'm saying is that a visitor comes to our site that has heard about the software would probably never find it, because there are no directions or m...
