Re: Tinseth vs. IBU

Found this interesting AHA discussion: https://www.homebrewersassociation.org/forum/index.php?topic=28945.0&utm_source=informz&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=what%27s+brewing+3%2E21%2E17&_zs=SufNJ1&_zl=rDfg3 It seems that some brewers are foregoing calculating IBU's for late additions in favor of jus...

Re: Tinseth vs. IBU

Oh my I really can't believe this thread is two years old. (and I am two years older) I am sitting here drinking a very nice IPA that formulas say should be fairly bitter (80 IBU's) but tastes like it could use just a smidge more hops. My two previous batches (70± IBU's) were fairly unremarkable, I ...

Re: Hop Flavouring

The latest groupthink on hop additions seems to be favoring 60,15,0 for bittering, flavor and aroma in that order. I have been following that schedule with good results. I dry hop with whatever I used for my late additions. If you use the BIABacus or Beersmith to shift some of your bittering additio...

Hop addition Exbeeriment

Hello all Has anyone read http://brulosophy.com/2016/05/02/hop-stand-vs-20-minute-boil-addition-exbeeriment-results/ I have transitioned to a small bittering charge at 60 minutes and a large hop addition at flameout with a generous dry hop. Now this article indicates there is not much difference and...

This is an opportunity to brew a 1.100 triple something-or-other.

25# of 2-row, 2# of crystal 80, maybe some honey and a handful of some Special W.

Even if it doesn't work out, it should be fun.

Joshua Will BIABacus estimate evaporation based on kettle size? Are efficiency and hop utilization linear? Is there any magic behind the BIABacus curtain that makes scaling more accurate? I ask more out of curiosity than anything else. If I do brew a 1G batch, it will be more as a learning experienc...

Not knowing my evaporation rate, efficiency or any of that geeky beer stuff for a 1G batch, any advice for scaling my 5G system down?

Mini BIAB

So..... Weather forecast is for cold and snow this weekend. I will go crazy if all I can do is sit around and watch TV. I have a 15L / 4G kettle that BIABacus says will give me 5L 1.3G VIF Assuming I can persuade my wife to let me brew indoors; Anything I need to do differently for a 1G batch? Any s...

I dumped cooled wort on top of the old yeast cake once and made good beer. Now I usually reserve about 1 cup (250 ml) clean the fermenter and pitch. Also makes good beer - with less trub at the end of fermentation. I use hop socks for both the boil and dry hop so my trub is "cleaner". YMMV Not sure...
